Sunday, November 21, 1976

Woke at 10:00. Paul was still acting like a baby. So we dressed and started to play Monopoly at 11:30. It was a very long game and ended at 3:00. Paul won. 3:30 - Paul left and Randy and I cleaned the basement. 4:00 - Went to get eggs at Jewel. Got back at 5:00 - Cleaned the basement until Randy left at 6:00. 6:00 - 10:30 - NBC the First Fifty Years. 10:30 - Mystery Theatre. Went to bed at 11:30.

November 20, 1976

Woke at 11:00 - Watched TV all afternoon. 1:30 - Destroy All Monsters. 3:00 - 5 - Roller skated downstairs. 6:00 - Paul came over to sleep over. Played with puzzles until 8:00 - Randy came over at 8:30. Listened to tapes and played with the puzzles. 10:15 we played Monopoly to midnight. Paul won by the time we were ready for bed it was 1:00. All night, Paul was pulling the covers off, throwing things and acting like a baby. We didn't get to sleep until 4:30.

Friday, November 19, 1976

All that happened; In I.A.; got wood for my car. Math we had a test. Read "Gone With the Wind" I had to go up and read to him. Forgot the book in school, so I can't read all weekend.

Tomorrow Randy and Paul are going to sleep over downstairs, if that does happen. I'll write what happens Sunday.

Watched a dumb movie about a half man/half octopus. Went to bed at 1:30.

Forgot to say, Paul got his glasses back Wednesday.

Thursday, November 18, 1976

Got up today with a scare. Today was a late day and I got up at 9:40. I thought I was late! In Science, gave Dykel my Math homework, he got caught with it and we both got in trouble. Then I.A., then Library, read to page 500. Lunch, Reading, Math, History.

After school, Dinah. 4:15 - Went to Paul's house until 5:30.

Then the dog ran away. I went looking for him. The dummy got locked in the garage. 9:30- Keith came by for spelling words. 10:00 - Mary Hartman. 10:30 - Mystery Theater. Today we got our report card. My grades: Reading - S; Spelling - S; History - G; Music - G; Science - G; I.A. - S.

So I'm not perfect. Went to bed at 12:15.

I think that the code for the grades was S = Satisfactory. G- Good.

Wednesday, November 17, 1976

Had a half day today; same as yesterday. Classes were 9:00 - English/Reading. 10:30 - Math. 11:15 - History, started on a graph. They let us out at noon.

Got home at 12:15 - Mike and Aunt May were here. Mom and Aunt May left for Alden's. At 12:30 - From 1:00 -1:45 - Goofed around downstairs. At 2:15 - Cher came home from school and we left for the park. They are fixing the tracks. Came home at 3:00. And Mike and Aunt May left at 3:30.

Paul came over at 4:00 - He did my drawing for I.A. (That man hates me in I.A) 6:30 - Odd Couple. 8-10 - Read to page 450. 10:00 - Mary Hartman. 10:30 - Mystery Theatre. 11:30 - Read to page 479. Went to bed at 12:00.

Alden's Catalog Store was a store on Cicero where the returned items that had been purchased from the catalog were returned. My mother and her sister May often went to Alden's at least once a week. Mike was May's grandson. He and I spent a lot of time together at Alden's crawling in the display bins, playing on dirty floors with broken toys, hiding among stakes of clothes. This was in the days; how we were never molested or abducted is a miracle.

May was a man-ish sort of woman with a huge booming voice. If I have any power to my voice at all I know it comes from that side of the family. We could hear here talk all over the huge store, and the tone of her yelling "Michael" still haunts me.

Following one of these trips to Alden's my aunt and mother got into a fight over either some item that one of them wanted, or something my aunt said about my mother being cheap. Regardless, the reason seemed petty to me even at 13. After the fight my mother never spoke to her sister again for 15 years until she had a massive stroke, and even then it was a cold reunion; May died soon after.

Tuesday, November 16, 1976

Cannot write much because there is a radio drama called "Two by Twain". All that happened was that we had a half day of school. I took a bath. Watched TV. I didn't read today.

Monday - November 15, 1976

Felt dizzy in school and a little nauseous. The highlights of school were gym. Mainly because it seemed like it was below zero. And in history, I got a 100 on the test.

Walking home from school, just across the street, I saw a case with glasses in it. I didn't think much of it then, so I just left them there. After school watched Dinah. 5:00 - News.

6:30 - Paul called to say that he'd lost his glasses. After I told him what happened, he wanted me to look for his glasses in the dark. 7:00 - He came over and I told him where to look. He's so weird. He had his glasses in his folder and they fell out.

8:00 -Sybil. 10:00- Mary Hartman. 11:00- Read to page 283. Went to bed at 12:10.

Sunday - November 14, 1976

Felt a little better in the night. But I still was sneezing. Woke at 12:00 from a dream about the end of the world. Didn't do anything all afternoon but rest, watch TV, and read. 6:00 - Apple Dumpling Gang. 8:00 -Sybil. 10:00- Monty Python. 11:00 - Hollywood Squares. Went to bed at 11:55. I feel a little bit better, but I don't know if I'm going to go to school tomorrow. Cher's mad at me because I ate her pizza. Read to page 233.

A note about Monty Python. For about ten years Monty Python played on the public television station WTTW every Sunday night. It seemed so dirty at the time. And was probably the first time I ever saw breasts. A few months ago I was in a laundromat and on their TV WTTW was showing a retrospect of the show; It just seemed quaint.

Saturday, November 13, 1976

Woke at 10:30. Watched TV to 11:30. I feel awful. My cold is worse. 1:00 - Started to clean the basement. 2:00 - I watched a stupid movie called "Billy The Kid Vs Dracula" 3:30- 4:30- Read Gone With The Wind. 5:00- Beverly Hillbillies. 5:30 - Lucy. 6:00 - Sorting it Out. 7:00 - Holmes and Yo Yo. 7:30 - Bob Newhart Show. 8:00 - The Raven. 10:30 - Saturday Night Live. 12:00 - wrote in here. Went to bed at 1:00.

For being sick I certainly stayed up late.

Friday, November 12, 1976

Forgot to write last night, so I'm writing this on November 13th. I felt sick all day. I shouldn't have gone to school. In Science, he wasn't there, so Miss Particle was our substitute teacher. She gave us a lecture on High School. From what I've heard "It's a bummer". You have to get all passing grades to get out or you have to do it all over again.

I might as well skip the morning. In Reading, 63 pages of Gone With the Wind. After school Paul wanted me to go to Parent's Night and he didn't think I was sick. I seem to get worse every day. Went to bed at 12:30.

Thursday, November 11, 1976

Woke at 11:20. Randy came over at 12:00. At 1:00 - Went to the store to look around. Got back at 2:00. I felt sick all day. At 3:00 - Sat around and ate, looked through my scrapbook. 4:00 - Made tea. 4:30 - Went to Jewel and Osco. I thought that I had lost my hood of my coat, but the lady at the counter found it. Thank God!

In Osco, bought "Gone With the Wind". 6:30 - We turned all the lights out and tried to find each other. 7:00 - Singing in the Rain. 9:00 - Randy Left. 9:30- Homework. 10:00 - Mary Hartman. Paul called to tell me he's going to call the Radio Station. Later he found out he was going to be on the Eddie Schwartz show. I don't feel so good. Went to bed at 12:30. Paul wasn't on.

Things that make you go hmmm.. "Turning all the lights out..."

Wednesday, November 10, 1976

In Science, he gave us a lecture on gum chewing; And if you get caught they will call your parents. Now isn't that dumb! In I.A. the same thing. Gym, played basketball. Lunch, English/Reading, Math. In History, had test.

After school played with water. 7:00 - Bionic Woman. 8:00 - Death Wish. 10:00 - Mary Hartman. 11:00 - Man in the White Suit. 12:00- 12:30 - Wait Until Dark. Went to bed at 1:00. I'm not going to read "The Other".

My school was obsessed by gum chewing. It was probably because underneigh every desktop was caked with gum going back to 1957.

I'm completely confused with the sentence I wrote "played with water". I think I'd have to go to regressive therapy to bring back that memory.

Tuesday, November 9, 1976

Today was the same. I could write that everyday.

Anyway, I can't stay up too long tonight. Since everyone is going to bed. Went to bed at 12:00.

Monday - November 8, 1976

In Science, we're still working with shells and rocks, but now with acid. I.A. That man is such a crab. Gym, it was freezing. Lunch, English/Math, got a 56 on Friday's test.

After school Randy called and hung up again and again. Mom went out to the store at 5:00. 6:00- Dick Van Dyke. 6:30 - Odd Couple. 7:00- GONE WITH THE WIND. 9:00 - Did homework while watching The Dean Martin Special about the 20s. 10:00 - Mary Hartman. 10:30 - Mystery Theatre. Went to bed at 12:00

I miss Dean Martin Specials. At that time they seemed like something that never would not be there. I think I took them for granted.

Sunday - November 7, 1976

Today was a bore. All I did was watch TV. Woke at 12:00, ate, and at 12:30 - Move Over Darling, which I'd seen many times before. It ended at 2:30. At 3:00 - Cheryl washed the dog. 3:30 - 5:30 - When Worlds Collide. 6:00 - Walt Disney showed the New Mouseketeers. At 7:00 - The longest awaited movie of all time! GONE WITH THE WIND, part 1 - 7- 10.

10:00 - No Honestly. 10:30 - Monty Python. 11:00 - Day of the Triffids. Went to bed at 12:30.

This is the 2nd month of writing in this diary.

It was such a big -f'in deal when Gone with the Wind came on TV. I it was the highest rated show of all time up to that point.

but I wish now I had a day where I got up at noon and watched Doris Day, Sci-Fi and classic films for 12 hours!

Saturday, November 6, 1976

One of those days. Woke at 10:30 from a call from Randy. We were disconnected. Watched TV to 12:00 and listened to records until 1:30.

Then I left with $2.00 in my pocket to go to the roller rink. When I got there it was $2.25 to get in, so, Cher had to bring me money. When I got in McGuire and McAdams were bugging me to the breaking point. Also, they were calling me a fag. But when I called her a lesbian she threw a fit. So they're going to beat me up. The place closed at 4PM, so I called Cher to pick me up. Only one and a half hours for $2.25! What a jip!

At 6:00 - Emergency One. 7:00 - Mary Tyler Moore. 7:30 - Bob Newhart Show. 8:00- Pit and the Pendulum. 8:30 - End of Day of the Dolphin. 10:30 - Weekend.

12:00 - 1:30- Radio. Went to bed at 1:30.

I suspect it was around this time that I started to be called a faggot around the school...and McGuire and McAdams I think started to spread it around the school. I was a victim of being small and having bad press. Years later when i was in college and looking very buff and punked out I ran into McGuire, she was working at the local Osco, she looked sad and bloated. She was married with two kids at the age of 21. I felt sorry for her.

Friday, November 5, 1976

In Science, Worked with the video tape. When it was my turn fatty Dykel blocked me out. I.A. Worked on drawings. Music, Lunch. In the afternoon Reading. Started "The Other". Math, had a test, then History.

I'm going to go to the roller rink tomorrow with Randy. Paul didn't want to go because he doesn't know how, what a jerk.

At 7:00 - Snoopy Come Home. 8:30 - Play it Again, Sam 10:00 - Mary Hartman

10:30 - 11:40 - Finished "Providence Island". 12:00 - Eddie Schwartz. Went to bed at 12:30.

My apologies to Dykel for calling him fatty... but I seem a little on edge lately in these posts.

And Eddie Schwartz was a radio talk show host before talk shows were very popular. It was just light chit-chat from midnight to dawn. I spent many a weekend night listening to him. Ironically, Randy mentioned in this book ended up being his producer for a year in the early 90s.

Thursday, November 4, 1976

It was cold today. Science; had a substitute (lady). She couldn't stand whispering or talking. Did the same experiments as yesterday. I.A.; had substitute (man). English, I forgot to tell you that I got an F+ on my composition. Math, changed rooms. History, got a 92 on last weeks tests.

After school, from 4-6 went to the library and did homework. 7:00- Paul came over and we played dice, before he left we had a pen fight; I'm all marked up now. 9:00 - He left and I took a bath. 10:00 - Mary Hartman. 10:30 - Mystery Theatre. Went to bed at 11:30.

I really wish I had a copy of my composition, it seemed from this I worked hard on it. But I think in retrospect I was the poster child for Johnny Doesn't Apply Himself.

Wednesday, November 3, 1976

Found out that Carter won this morning.

In Science, did experiment with shells and rocks. I.A; I still hate it, I wonder if will ever like it. Gym, he made us do a whole period of exercises. Lunch, fighting with Jay, sort of. In the afternoon. English/Reading, the same. But in Math we had a sub who was Mr Pluto, who I hadn't seen since the 5th grade.

After school called Randy and talked for about 15 minutes. 5:00 - My Favorite Martian. 5:30- Brady Bunch (s.o). 6:30 - The Odd Couple. 7:00 - Paul came again. That kid is such a brat, he acts like a baby. And if he doesn't get Pauly's way he throws a temper tantrum. I looked in Cheryl's year book All their hopes never came true. She doesn't even know any of the people in there, except for Nancy and Jeanette. Well...

Went to bed at 12:00

I don't know what was going on with me and the philosophical ending to this entry, but I do remember that the teacher in I.A did hate me, I think because I was small and weak. I always had the feeling he wanted to hit me. Maybe the weight of the world was finally falling on my shoulders at 13.

And even I'm a little grossed out by the masturbation during the Brady Bunch... Ewwwh...

Tuesday, November 2, 1976

Woke at 9:30 from a called from Randy. He said he was coming over at 11:00. So I watched TV until 11:00. Then Paul called, he wanted to come over. I said from him to come over at 12:30. Called Randy to see if he left, he didn't. The he called Paul and said that he was here. So Paul came over at 11:30. We played dice to 2:0. then went to the store and came back at 2:15. After a little while, took Sparky for a walk, and met Tom on his paper route.

Came back at 4:00, played dice. At the end I started to have a lucky streak, so Paul threw a temper tantrum. He left at 5:00 and came back at 6:00. Started to play dice again (I always lose). At 7:00 - Randy came, Paul left at 8:45, randy at 9:30.

The election; they think that Carter will win, but they are not sure. Went to bed at 12:00. Thompson is our new governor.

Again, Randy came over hours later than he said he would...this continues to this day.

Monday - November 1, 1976

In Science, he brought the video tape machine and was taking movies of the class. I wasn't in the movies because Wallis, who is very fat, blocked me out of the picture. I.A.; I hate that room. Gym; basketball. Lunch, English/Reading; had a substitute. Keith was taking my paper and the teacher didn't care. Math and History, start new chapter. 3:30- Kisses for My President. 5:00- My Favorite Martian. 6:00 - Called Randy. 6:30 - Paul called. 7:15 - He came over, played dice to 9:00, then stayed in my bedroom to 10:00. 10:00- Mary Hartman. 10:30 - Mystery Theatre. 11:45 - Read to 12:20 - went to bed at 12:30.

Concerning, Industrial Arts. I think around this time I started to really not like going there. Looking back I believe that the teacher had anger management issues, he would fly into rages, and a think at one point he threw some kid up against the wall and punched him in the stomach. This was years before lawsuits for these type of things.

Sunday - October 31, 1976

Woke at 10:30. 11:00 - Jetsons. 11:30 - The 3 Stooges. 12:00 - The Black Cat. At 2:00- Dykel came over to do homework, until 5. All day bratty kids were ringing our doorbell. At 5:30 - Space 1999. 7:00 - Life Goes To the Movies. 10:30- Mystery Theatre. What a boring day, sometimes I wish I would drop dead.

Well tomorrow is a new week. We will have a new President. Wit it be Ford or Carter? Will our new governor be Howlett or Thompson? Well, went to bed at 12:00.

Saturday, October 30, 1976

Very tired tonight. Well woke up at 10:30. TV to 11:30. AT 12:00 - Mad Monster Party to 2:00. Then Randy called about 3:00 to see if I could go to the show. I said 'yes'. I got there at 4:00. Fool around until 6:00 when we left. We saw the ending of "The Black Bird" and "Silent Movie", which was a silent movie. Then we stayed for all of "The Black Bird", which was pretty good.

Left for home at 10:35, arrived at 11:05. Watched Saturday Night. 12:00-1:00 - Island of Lost Souls, and worked in my scrapbook. Went to bed at 1:30.

>"The Black Bird" was a comedy sequal to "The Maltese Falcon", starring George Segal. For the younger generation, there was a mysterious time in the 70s when George Segal was a big star and it was almost difficult not to see a movie without him or Jane Fonda in it.

and concerning my scrapbook: I should start incorporating the photos into this blog since I was doing that at the same time.

Friday, October 29, 2006

Weeks go by fast. It was warmer today. It was Kennedy High Schools homecoming and there was a parade with floats, horses and clowns all around the school. Science (part 3 of the test). I.A. worked on drawings. Music, boring. Lunch, English/Reading, had sub, during we had to vote on who we thought was going to win the election. Math, History, worked.

Afterschool, 3:30 - Dinah. 7:00 - Bob Hope Special. 8:00 - Look What Happened to Rosemary's Baby. 10:00 - Mary Hartman. 10:30 - Horror at 35,000 ft. 12:10 - The Witch's Curse. Went to bed at 1:20.

I'd love to see the sequal to Rosemary's Baby again. And I recently rewatched Horror at 35,000 Feet... hilarous classic TV Movie.

Thursday, October 28, 1976

It was clear and cold. Science, second part of test. I.A., took notes. Library, read for the first time in a week. Lunch (they changed the bells in school, so that we don't have 5 minutes passing time) English, turned in composition. Math, he gave us a lecture on going to the bathroom, it was so funny. History (test). 3:30 - Kiss of Evil (s.o.) 5:00 - Went to lay down and fell asleep to 6:30. 6:30 - Paul came over, goofed around and did homework. He went home at 8:30. 9:00 - Van Dyke and Company. 10:00 - Mary Hartman. 10:30 - Washed hair, during Mystery Theatre. Went to bed at 11:45.

Wednesday, October 27, 1976

I don't believe it. It snowed today. In Science, first part of a test. IA, got a C+ on my car. In gym, squad 1 played basketball, while the rest of the class had to write. Lunch, English, Reading, Math, History. 3:30 - Hot Dog. 4:00 - Munsters 5:00 - Did homework. 6:00 - Paul came over. 7:00 - worked on my composition. Paul left at 8:30. Continued to work until 10:00. 10:00 - Mary Hartman. 10:30 Worked during Mystery Theatre. Finished it at 11:20. It has 642 words. Went to bed at 12:30.

Per my usual routine, I was finishing up the assignment the day before it was due. Things haven't changed with me at all.

Wednesday, December 13, 2006

Tuesday, October 26, 1976

It was rainy and cold all day. In Science, planned for a test. I.A. Finished car. Music was a bore. Lunch, English, we came in too noisy and he said that we had to stay after school. Math. Social Studies, had to do a punishment paper. At 3:00 - Had to stay to hear his dumb lecture about lining up. He said that we were the manure of the school. Well, he's the gook at the bottom of the toilet. 3:15, he let us go. Mom waited, went to the library. Came back and watched TV. 7:00 - Paul came over. 8:30 "Now Playing at a Theatre Near You" after he left.

9:00 - 10:00 - homework. 10:00 - Mary Hartman. 10:30 - Mystery Theatre. Went to bed at 11:45.

If I'm not mistaken my teacher of English this year was Mr. O'Keefe. He was a buzz shaved army stud sort of guy with a bad temper. Everyone was afraid of him. I always wanted to run my hand over his head to feel the bristles, but I was terrified of him too.

Oh, and "Now Playing..." was the name of the Gene Siskel/Roger Ebert Show before it was "At the Movies with Siskel and Ebert".

Monday - October 25, 1976

Another week. In Science (he was crabby) did experiment about boiling water. I.A; took notes. Gym; basketball. We had indoor lunch. English/Reading, Math, History. Walked home. 3:30 - Taste of Evil until 4:30 when Randy called. Talked until 5:00. My Favorite Martian. 5:30 - Went downstairs to lay down (s.o). 6:00 - Paul called to say he's coming here but he didn't come. 7:30 - Rhoda. 7:30 - Phyllis. 8:00- Maude. 8:30 - All's Fair. 9:00 - Worked on composition that's due Thursday about my Uncle Tom's Funeral (see Oct 3). 9:30 - Called Paul and talked until 9:50. 10:00 - Mary Hartman. 10:30 - Mystery Theatre. Went to bed at 12:00.

I wish I had my composition on the funeral. It would be interesting to see if I mentioned how boring The Rosary was in it.

Sunday - October 24, 1976

Today was a bore. Woke at 10:30 from a dream about vampires or something. 10:30 - Valley of the Dinosaurs. AT 11:30 - The 3 Stooges. 12:00 - Monkeyed around with the film editor downstairs. At 1:30 - Gaslight, I liked it. 3:30 - A little bit of 'Dick Washington and his Cat'.

4:00 - Was going to do homework, but I got a sliver in my finger and took Cher's tweezers and then I misplaced them. She was after me all day to find them, but I didn't. Started homework at 5:00. At 8:00 Watched "The Stepford Wives", I think it was better than the book.

10:30 - Monty Python's Flying Circus. 11:00 - Hollywood Squares. Went to bed at 11:50. 1:00 (s.o)

Saturday, October 23, 1976

To tired to write, but I have too. Woke at 9:30. Watched TV until 11:00. Randy called and said that Paul was coming to help us deliver pamphlets. His father came at 12:00, had to wait until 1:30 to start. Finished at 2:45. Got $4.00!

Hung around his house to 4:30, when we went to see "The Big Bus" and "Logan's Run". "The Big Bus" was funny, but very dumb. "Logan's Run" should have been rated R, but it was a very good movie. 8:30 - Left there, ate a hot dog at his apartment. Left for home at 9:30, didn't get home until 10:10.

Paul stayed until 10:30. From then on Saturday Night Live. Went to bed at 12:30.

Randy had found out that the Republican Party in Cicero needed help passing out pamphlets for their candidates. It was exciting to actually earn money by just putting fliers in people's mailboxes. Randy would take a huge stack of the fliers and shove as many as he could into people's mailboxes, since I think we were being paid by the flier we passed out. Probably a penny a piece. Randy told me to lie to them and tell them I was from Cicero because the Cicero Republicans hated Chicagoans because they were all Democrats. At the time I had no idea what the difference was but I lied to the guy who was the head of the Republican office. But being a terrible liar I just stumbled around trying to explain why I didn't know anything about Cicero, saying my family just moved in the neighborhood.

My other memory of doing this was going up to an old house and there were hundreds of flies on the living room window. I was sure that there was some dead person in the house, but I dutifully just put the Jim Thompson flier in the mailbox and ran down the stairs.

And I recently watched "The Big Bus" again after almost 30 years. It's hilarious.

Friday, October 22, 1976

Got up at 6:00, left at 6:40. The bus left at 7:05. Sat next to Dykel for a little while, then sat next to Wallis. Got to New Salem at 10:30. We had the whole hour to go where ever we wanted. There were a bunch of buildings full of old furniture.

After that we went to Lincoln's tomb, that was o.k, but nothing too good. Went to eat after that at 12:00, at McDonald's. I think I caught a cold from the orange soda there. I had to go to the bathroom over there.

Our driver was always late. Next the State Museum, then the Capitol building. There there was a dome that reminded me of a church. Also, the Senate and the Legislator Room. Then the Old Capitol building, that was pretty good. Then Lincoln's house, that was my favorite.

On the way home everyone was fighting (even me). The pizza was terrible, too salty. Left to go at 5:30. The bathrooms on the bus were so small. Got home at 9:15. Went to bed at 11:10.

Note to anyone with 13 year olds going to Springfield, skip right to Lincoln's House and don't eat the pizza in downstate Illinois.

Thursday, October 21, 1976

Can't write much. Must get up at 6AM. Today in Science he said the whole room will be on TV. Well, he's going to get a video set and make a tape of the classroom's experiements. Have to go now. Went to bed at 11:40.

Wednesday, October 20, 1976

Well, it's another day. First in Science, notes and an experiment with ice. I.A.: Had to answer questions. Gym: Same dumb thing, football. Lunch, English/Reading, Math, History. Had to walk home. Yesterday a cat followed me home, today no cat.

5:00 - My Favorite Martian. 6:30 - Paul said he coming over. He came over at 7:00. He's such a brat; he was spraying disinfectant all over the place and got me in trouble. He left at 9:00. Did homework. 10:00 - Mary Hartman. Forgot to do Math home work and did it during Mystery Theatre. Went to be at 11:50.

I'm mystified why I insisted on marking each class the same way in every entry, since nothing really changed. Almost like I'm counting down the hours until the end of the day.

Can't write much because 'Dracula' is on the radio. School is the same. Read "Providence Island" to page 94. Talked to Dick Lawrence for 15 minutes. Went to bed at 12:15. On 'Mary Hartman': Mary and Tom are back together. (s.o)

I'm sure that my extra (s.o)'s had to do with reading that dirty book "Providence Island".

Monday, October 18, 1976

Well, when i got up it was 36 degrees. Got a ride in the car. Science, he was not there so the principal was our substitute. He made us write. I.A, worked on my car. Gym, very dumb. Lunch, it was about 50 degrees; the same old thing. English/Reading, Math, History. Walked home.

Yes, it is heaven to have a TV in my room again. We got our color TV back, finally! At 6:30, cleaned room and watched TV. 7:00 - Rhoda, 7:30: Phyllis. 8:00 - Maude. 8:30 - All's Fair. 9:30 Paul called, we talked as I did homework. 10:00 - Mary Hartman. 10:30 - Washed my hair. 10:45 - wrote in here until 11:45. Went to bed at 12:15. Read "Providence Island" for about 20 minutes to page 34.

Sunday, October 17, 1976

Today was very cold. Got up at 12:00. (Pretty late, huh?) From the time I got up until 2:20, watched "Woman of the Year". About 1:30, Mom and Dad came home from the Flea Market and brought a pumpkin (they bought one yesterday too). At 3:00 - Me and Cher went to the examine her plant. Well, we found this plant was 7 feet big. We brought it home and counted seeds and bugs called Weevils. We found fifteen, in 18 capsules.

Cher carved out the small pumpkin. Paul called at 7:00; he wanted me to come over but I said 'no'. Me and Cher goofed around with the intercoms, and took pictures of Sparky with a Howlett hat on.

Listened to Mystery Theatre, talked on the intercoms before going to bed. Went to bed at 12:00 (s.o)

I remember those intercoms, I don't remember why we had them. But my parents were compulsive shoppers and would buy the strangest things just because they were on sale. The intercoms were meant for an office, but my sister and I had them strung between our rooms.

Oh, and Howlett (hat)was a candidate for Governor of Illinois in 1976. Sparky was my sister's dog, who later became my dog when she got married in '78. Sparky was put to sleep by my parents soon after because he had a bladder issue and he had to go outside several times a day. They didn't want to be bothered; so without telling me they had him put to sleep. It still bugs me.

Saturday, October 16, 2006

Woke at 9:45. Watched cartoons and stuff until 12:00, when there was a wasp on the window. It took me 15 minutes to kill it. At 2:00 went to wait for Randy at the bus stop. He came at 3:00. Talked until 4. Then went to Raymond Moe's house. Stayed there for a few minutes and then went to eat. When we got back Paul called. It was so funny he thought that Randy was on tape, but I should remember this.

Paul came over and Randy hid on him right in front of his nose. Talked and stuff to 10:30. When Paul had to leave. Randy left at 11:00, when his father picked him up. 11:00 - Watched Zulu. Went to bed at 1:10. Tomorrow must help Cher with the weed.

Up until this day Randy is consistantly late. In fact, I've had him call saying he was around the corner he was coming right over and then never show up. I've gotten used to it, so the fact I waited at the bus stop for an hour must have been the start of this trend.

I sort of remember going to Raymond Moe's house. And I remember that his parents made it really clear that we weren't welcome. In fact, I think that we had to stand outside in the cold while he finished eating dinner. I remember that Moe said that he didn't know who Johnny Carson was because he had to go to sleep at 9 each night. This was absolutely absurd to me and my parent's "who cares when you go to sleep policy". As long as I was quiet my parents didn't care if I stayed up until dawn.

I love how my writing short hand for the extremely funny incident is "but I'm sure I'll remember this."

Friday, October 15, 1976

Today was cold. In Science, he gave us a lecture about colds. I.A (I always called this ID, if you look back through the diary, but Paul said it's I.A) Well we had a test; I got a C. Music, what a bore. In the afternoon, spelling test in English/Reading. Math (quiz). History, got an 85 in yesterday's test.

I had to stay after school becasue I forgot to underline my spelling.

Randy called me up, he said he is coming tomorrow. Listened to records of a little while. Read and finished "Around the Moon". 8:45 - Called Paul and talked for an hour. At 10:00 - Watched Mary Hartman though the window. 10:30 - The Importance of Being Ernest. Went to bed at 12:20.

Thursday, October 14, 1976

Today was like yesterday. In Science, listened to him talk. I.D. Started my car. In library, started "Around the Moon" a sequel to "From the Earth to the Moon". Lunch was the same. next in the afternoon English/Reading, and Math. History. After school gave Dykel a ride home. At 4, Mom gave me a ride to the library, Brown and Myers were there. It was funny, there was a dirty book and we were all trying to get it. We goofed off until around 5 when they left. Got home at 6:10. 6:30 - Odd Couple. Slept (s.o) from 7:15. 8:00- 9 a bath read "The Island People". 9:00 -Homework. 10:00 - Listened to Mary Hartman. 11:10 - Mystery Theatre. Went to bed at 12:00.

I remember that the dirty book we were looking at; it was "The Joy of Sex". And when were done looking at the sexual positions and giggling like, well, 13 year olds we put it in the children's book section.

I have debated whether to put in my 'secret codes' into this blog. But what the hell. (s.o) was my quaint term for masturbation. "s.o" meaning "sperm out". Is it possible to be even more nerdly. But I'm sure that after hanging out at the library with two girls looking at a sex book it was all I could to contain myself.

It is the first instance of this so far. I don't know if I wasn't doing "it" or just not writing it down.

Wednesday, October 13, 1976

Today was sunny, but cool. In Science, took notes. In I.D. Got my styraform for my car. In Gym, football. At Lunch paid money for Springfield Trip. In the afternoon, English/Reading, Math, History. Gave Dykiel a ride home.

When I was home read "Salem's Lot" to 5. Play called and came over at 6:30. We played poker until 8:30. Then he got hungry and mad because he didn't get any food. He's such a baby. After he left read "Salem's Lot" and finished it.

10:00 - Mary Hartman, the same way as yesterday. 10:30 - Mystery Theatre. Went to bed at 11:45.

I'm so glad I finished "Salem's Lot"... I was sick of hearing about it.

Tuesday, October 12, 1976

Another week of school.

First Science, worked with weights. I.D, worked on drawing a car. Music, oh I hated that; we had to write the Star Spangled Banner. At Lunch I forgot my money for Springfield trip. I must bring it tomorrow. English/Reading, then Math and History. I gave Dykel a ride home.

Played records all afternoon and I read "Salem's Lot". Paul caome over at 7:00 and stayed until 9:00. During that time we played poker. 9:00 - Read more of "Salem's Lot". 10:00 - Mary Hartman, through the Fox's window again. 10:30 - Mystery Theatre. Went to be at 11:45.

I'm not sure if Dykel will show up again in this book (I'm really trying not to read ahead); but he was a strange character from my grammer school and early high school years. He was a big brute of a guy. All muscle and I guess the term for him would be a burnout, but always very nice to me. He was truly a bad boy who was hiring prostitutes in our Freshman year of high school and hanging out with all the other burnouts.

A few years later, Randy moved to Atlanta. We used to keep in touch by sending tapes back and forth. Soon they turned into big productions. Here is an excerpt of my trying to do a serious interview with Dykel in 1979 about his drug use. Click > here to here my 1979 interview with Dykel. It's a little long and I'm not the best interviewer in the world. But give me a break I was 17.

Monday, October 11, 1976

Oh God! I hated this day. First of all I woke at 10:15 and I had to get to Paul's house by 10:30. I got there on time. We took the el downtown and must have gotten there at 12:00. First went to the Merchandise Mart, but on the way back I lost them. I was so scared I must have looked for them for a half-hour. then I took the Archer Express, but it turned down Cicero. I almost couldn't keep in the tears. I got off at White Castle and then Dad drove me home. After a little while Cher and I went to take notes on the weed. At 6:00 - Paul and Randy came over and told me about the parade. Randy left at 7:00 and Paul at 9:15 after that homework until 10. Watched Mary Hartman from Fox's window. Went to bed at 11:45 while listening to Mystery Theatre.

To clarify this post. Paul, Randy and I were going downtown for the Columbus Day Parade on State Street. As noted before with our playing ditch with each other; Paul and Randy decided to do that with me, but because of the crowd it was impossible to find each other again. I do remember being terrified of being downtown in a huge crowd and feeling like they left me on purpose.

Also, this is an interesting tidbit about the incident of watching Mary Hartman from Fox's window. At this time we didn't have a second TV so I couldn't watch Mary Hartman. The TV downstairs was broken, so I would listen to the show on my radio that picked up TV signals. I would then stand on my windowsill and peer through the blinds to my neighbor's house into their bedroom where they watched it every night. I basically watched it between my neighbor's feet. I did this several times. I hope that there is a statute of limitations for being a peeping tom.

Sunday, October 10, 1976

Well today was like yesterday. Partly cloudy and cool. Woke at 11:30. Watched TV off and on all day. At 3:00 started to do homework. Stopped at 3:30. Ate and watched TV. Then did homework until 5:30. At 6:00 went with Cher to see that plant of hers. 7:00 - Keith came over but I told him I had too much homework to so, so he left. Then Paul came over. We were supposed to do our homework, but we didn't. So Paul gave me his homework. He left at 9:30. From 9:30 to 11:00 I did homework. 10:30 - Listened to Mystery Theatre. 11:30 - Read "Salem's Lot". Went to bed at 12:30.

This must have been during one of those "I'm really going to buckle down and be a good student" periods of my life.

Saturday, October 9, 1976

Woke at 8:30, but we did go downtown. We left at 10:00 but didn't get down there until 11:30. First we went to the Water Tower Place. We went everywhere; we got in trouble for playing the elevators. Then we ate at McDonald's. Next we went to the sky deck of the John Hancock Building.

We left at 4:00 to go to the beach. Started to leave around 5:15. As we were walking an old lady stopped us to preach about God. Finally got on the bus at 6:10. Didn't get home until 6:45. After that Randy and I went downstairs and talked until 10:00.

Went to bed at 12:00.

For being 13 I was very adventurous with my travels downtown. At that time in the 70s, downtown Chicago was practically deserted. A few scattered old movie houses playing grind house movies, stew bums in the street, and State Street dispite Marshall Fields and Carson Pirie Scott was the home to mainly wig shops. As mentioned earlier in this blog going downtown was all about Randy and I running around, pushing as many elevator buttons as possible until security kicked us out of the building.

Friday, October 8, 1976

Today I woke with sore stomach, but I had to go to school anyway. Well school is up to it's old boring self. Well I came through it alive!

After school called Randy to tell him we were going to go downtown tomorrow. But I will have to get up at 8. Moe is coming too. At 5:30 went to the library to make a copy of that ghost paper I got yesterday to send to Aunt Celia. 6:00 Called Dick Lawrence to tell him that I was going to be downtown tomorrow.

7:00 - Donnie and Marie. 8:00 - We had to get tires at Goldblatt's. 10:00 - Watched Mary Hartman. I'm too tired to write anymore. Went to bed at 12:00.

My aunt Celia was my favorite aunt. She was the wife of my mother's brother Tony. She was so sweet and kind; and she spoke in this quite lilting way, which reminds me of Peggy Lee's speaking voice. My Uncle Tony was terribly mean to her. I remember that she loved watching old movies and was a fan of all the old movie stars. Tony thought it was a waste of time and would yell at her all the time about watching movies. Once when we were in Wisconsin on a family vacation she brought me back to the cabin so we could watch the Liberace show. Uncle Tony came in and slammed the TV off saying that she was wasting her life watching that fairy.

Thursday, October 7, 1976

Today was a long day, but I didn't do much. Woke at 6:00, got dressed and ready to go. All the aunts and uncles were there to say goodbye. Left about 6:45. I must have slept to 9 in the car. Then I read "Salem's Lot". We ate at 11:30; we all had beef. It was very tough and Mom sent hers back for pork. Read more until we got home at 3:00.

Randy called me to see if we were going downtown on Saturday. I said 'yes' but about 7:30 I called him back to tell him I had a stomach flu. Paul said I had lots of school work.

I do feel sick with a cold. Read (Do you know I didn't finish "Jaws" yet?) Watched Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. Went to bed at 12. I wonder if I'm going to go to school tomorrow.

Today is a whole month of writing in this diary.

When the aunts and uncles all met for the final goodbye that morning; a verbal fight broke out between my Aunt Kay and her Chicago siblings. Kay was holding some deep long resentment against my two uncles and my mother for never visiting her when her and Tom lived in Chicago. "We only lived a few couple blocks away from both of you and you never came to visit." There were many angry words said after which Aunt Kay was pretty much never spoken of again for several years.

A word about "Salem's Lot". Of all the books I read during this period I remember "Salem's Lot". I can recall my sitting on the floor of the backseat and just being enveloped by that book.

Wednesday, October 6, 1976

Today was not as long as yesterday, but it was very sad. Woke up at 7:30 and we packed everything, then we ate with Matt and Susu at a cafe. Went back put everything into the car and went to the funeral home.

It was so sad, almost everyone was crying because we had to say goodbye. Aunt Kay's face was covered with tears. Then we had to go to the church. Mike was with us. It was boring, but after that the funeral. Everyone was still crying. Then we ate. Then we all went back to Aunt Kay's house. Mike and Diana were the only one's I knew. But soon I got most of the kids cracking up. 9:00 - Went to Uncle Tony's house, where I'm sleeping tonight. They talked until one in the morning, but I went to bed at 12:00.

Matt was my cousin and Susu his Vietnamese wife. Diana was another second cousin who I grew up with because we were only a year apart.

Tuesday, October 5, 1976

Today was a long day. Woke up at 5:00 AM. It took one hour to get ready. Left at 6:00. It was 7 when it was totally light. It rained until 11. We stopped to eat at 9. I had pancakes and bacon. Going there I read "Reincarnation of Peter Proud" and I started "Jaws". When we got here it was only around 2:00.

We are staying at the Lansing Motel. Mike is next door, I think? After I watched "All in the Family" on this dumb black and white TV I got dressed up. Then we went to see Uncle Tom.

He looked so bad. Almost everyone there was crying. Saw Mike there. After that everyone went to Uncle Tony's for dinner at 5:00. We ate chicken. At 6:30, left for the funeral home. We got there at 7:05 for the rosary. I left because it was a bore. Watched Laverne and Shirley and Rich Man Poor Man. Read Jaws went to bed at 10:00.

Mike was my second cousin who was a couple years younger than me.

Monday, October 4, 1976

I'm going to go to Wisconsin at 4 AM this morning. In school, they said that we were going to go to Springfield on the 22nd, but it costs $15! So, I don't know if I will go. After school went to the library to renew a book. When Mom came home from the hairdresser we went to the store to get me a suit for the funeral. We went to four stores before we found one.

Well let me tell you about Mary Hartman. There seems to be more jokes this year. And it's much more stupider than last year. Tomorrow is a big day. Well I have to go to sleep now.
Bye for now.

Started to read The Reincarnation of Peter Proud.

Sunday - October 3, 1976

It was one of those days again. Woke up at 11:40. Cher made me clean the house with her until about 2:00, when Randy came over. We went downstairs to talk for about 20 minutes; then we walked around the airport. I was riding his bike and he was riding mine. Well, he must have run over some glass because the tire got a flat. We must have pushed it a mile! Went downstairs and talked.

Then I found that Uncle Tom died and we will have to got to Wisconsin from Tuesday to Thursday. Well this diary will come too. Only two days of school next week!

Bye for now.

Randy was obsessed by the airport and for years wanted to be a pilot. He's now a flight attendant. Since I basically lived a block from Midway Airport we spent a lot of time there. During this time the airport was basically closed except for mail flights or the occational private jet. It was our play ground for many a Sunday afternoon.

My Uncle Tom was the husband of my mother's sister Katherine. I really don't remember much about him except that he smoked a lot and looked like Mortimer Schnerd.

My Aunt Katherine was the youngest aunt from my father's side of the family. They all seemed so old at the time, but I'm sure that she couldn't have been more than 40 when he died. She was a sweet woman, and for years, until I started high school, we would share letters. I haven't seen her in almost 25 years.

Saturday, October 2, 1976

Must make it brief. Went to Uncle Bruno's house. Lauren and Gail were there. We were there from 8 until 1. Went to bed at 2. Well at least nothing bad happend.

Oh, I forgot that I got up at 10:40.

Friday, December 1, 2006

Friday, October 1, 1976

Did you ever have one of those days? Kim was mad at me because I told Jay that our families were close friends once and she was afraid that her image would be ruined.

Then I left a book in math and who knows if I'll get it back.

After school Keith (sickness slime that's at the bottom of a toilet) took my bike, so I had to walk home. Now I have to bring a lock! And if that's not enough the sound on the downstairs TV is going!

WHY DID THEY HAVE TO TAKE OFF DARK SHADOWS!!!

Oh, well, the only good thing that will happen is Mary Hartman starts its second season. Watched "Paper Moon" 8-10. Then 10:30 - Johnny Carson's 14th Anniversary.

Goodbye you horrid day. Went to bed at 1:00.
__________

Kim Mackey was the daughter of my parents best friends; we were just a month apart in age and grew up together. She was extremely pretty and the term popular would have described her. I was a nerd and the fact that I said that we even knew each other was just so awful at the time I remember her horror when she found I told Jay that we even knew each other. Let alone that our families considered us cousins.

I guess at this point since I don't think Keith had shown me his huge stinky penis for a while, I was beyond any forgiveness for taking my bike. Plus, I couldn't give Jay a ride home, which probably made it worse. I think this day marked the end of the innocence of youth.

As for Dark Shadows... I remember the sting of the day that I turned on the TV and Channel 32, WFLD had stopped showing re-runs of Dark Shadows. I think that Barnabus was just about to kill Julia for betraying him. My Dark Shadows obsession continued late until my 30s when I watched all 1300+ episodes. I could go into it now, but it's more an opus explanation than a short paragraph. I'll do a post on my main blog.

And what can I say about Mary Hartman, still in my memory, the best show ever. It kept me going through many a dark angst ridden teenage weeknight. Again... too much to say in a paragraph.

Thursday, September 30, 1976

First in school. Science it was so funny. Wallis broke a beaker and then Schultz dropped CM3 down the drain. Finished "Atta" during during lunch. In Reading, we read a sad story. Math, then History. After school gave Keith a ride home. Cheryl and I went to see the weed. It must have a million-billion seeds on it. And Cheryl has to count them all!

After that saw Tom and went on his paper route with him. Started homework at 6:00. 7:00 - Paul wanted to come over and do homework, but all he did was swear and act big. 10:00 - Mary Hartman. 11:00 - Dark Shadows was not on and it was just getting good! Watched You Bet Your Life and put more pictures in my scrap book. Went to bed at 12:15.

Wallis was a chubby guy that I started to hang around with. My memories of him are of someone funny, but with a lot of issues. I have a vague memory of us wrestling around on the floor of my basement, and afterwards our friendship became awkward.

Schultz who dropped the CM3 down the drain was a complete psycho. Everyone called him Beachball. He was short and round. In high school, he was the go to guy for anything illegal: booze, pot, any sort of pill. A friend of mine bought a pipe bomb off of him in our senior year. It was terrifying to see one, and he panicked after getting it in his hands; We threw it into a vacant lot and called the police. I'm sure Schultz is in jail or running a very profitable wholesale store.

Wednesday, September 29, 1976

Today was an ordinary day. In Science, he gave us a lecture because someone in another class broke something. I.D., then gym, lunch (bore). In the afternoon English/Reading and Math all the same. In History got a 97 on my test.

Gave Jay a ride home then went to the park to pick weed for Cheryl. 3:30 - Dinah. 5:00 - Randy came over and we talked to about 6:00, then we went to the park. 7:00 -To Tell the Truth. 7:30 - a half hour of Bionic Woman. 8:00 - All in the Family. 8:30 - Did homework. 9:00 - Read Atta. 10:00 - Mary Hartman. 11:00 - Dark Shadows. Cheryl wanted to read September 10th of this book.

Tomorrow is the last day of the month. School seems to go by fast. Bye for Now.

My sister wanted to see September 10th, I guess because I talked about Cathy Brown, I'm assuming? I was always afraid someone would find this book so it's funny that now it's gone worldwide. It's amazing the things I'm remembering. But the posts themselves really are just more of the same... My life was just TV and school in that order.

Tuesday, September 28, 1976

It seems to take me longer to get up in the morning.

Today in Science we started 'lab'. I.D is a bore. Music we watched a film. After lunch, English/Reading; we had a sub. Math where we had to finish taking a test. After school gave Jay a ride home and then went to go pick weeds for Cheryl.

Went to the library to renew some books. Finished "Poseidon Adventure". Did homework from 5:30 - 6:30. 6:30 - Odd Couple. 7:00 - Happy Days. 7:30 - Shirley and Laverne. 8:00 - 9:00 - Rich Man, Poor Man. 9:00 - Washed hair. 10:00 - Mary Hartman. 10:30 - Wrote in this book. 11:00 - Dark Shadows. 11:30 - Read "Atta".
Went to bed at 12:00.

After 30 years I'm still going to bed at the same time around 12:00, and it's still taking me longer to get up in the morning. The "Shirley and Laverne" typo is as written, shades of my dyslexia.

And speaking of books I've never forgot. The book "Atta" was one of my favorites, I think I read it a couple of times. The plot was similar to "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids", because of some scientific mistake he's shrunken. He befriends a colony of ants, and helps them fight a war. That's all I remember, except it had a fabulous cover of a man in Don Quixote armour on an ant.

Monday - September 27, 1976

Today was cool and clear. School was a bore, but strangely it went fast. Everything was the same, but in History we had an easy test.

Gave Jay a ride home. When I got home, Paul called and told me to meet him at the library. When I got there he told me he got a punishment for calling a teacher a "terrific pig".

Well, finished homework there. Got home at 5:30, ate. Called Dick Lawrence and talked for 15 minutes. 6:30 - Odd Couple. 7:00 - Watched half of Captain and Tennille. 7:30 went to Zayre. 10:00 - Mary Hartman, 11:00 - Dark Shadows, 11:30 - Night Gallery. Went to bed at 12:15.

I'm still amazed that I kept giving Jay a ride home. I must have had a unconscious crush on him.

Zayre was a the poor man's K-Mart. It went out of business in the 90's after becoming Ames. Someday on my main blog I'll have to tell some tales of my time working the toy department of Zayre; I worked there for about 3 years. Until then Link here for an explanation of what the world of Zayre was about.

Sunday - September 26, 1976

Today was a bore. Woke about 10:00. It rained all day. At 11:00, Cheryl made me go with her to the prairie to pick weeds for one of her classes. She said, "You have to go there and pick some weeds for me." By the time we got home we were soaked. Most of that afternoon I read. At 5:00 Paul called and asked if I wanted to come over. I said no, but he talked me into it. Went there and played Careers. 7:00 - Earthquake. 8:30 - Went downstairs to listen to TV. 9:30 - The end of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. 11:00 - Hollywood Squares.

Hi new week of boring school. Went to bed at 12:00.

My sister was always telling me I had to do things, in retrospect just to get me outside instead of siting reading or watching TV.

Paul and I played Careers for hours. I can't really remember the concept; I think if you became a doctor or lawyer you won. I should have paid better attention to this game.

In reference to listening to television. Down in our basement was an old color television console set. The picture tube had blown out, but it still had sound. I remember that occasionally sparks would come out of the back; The only way I could stop it was by putting a screwdriver in the back and hitting some metal piece. I guess to discharge the electric build up. The fact that I'm not laying in Resurrection Cemetery right now is beyond me.

Saturday, September 25, 1976

Woke at 8:30 and watched cartoons until noon. At 12:30 went to the library in Garfield Ridge for a change. Read about 50 pages of the Posideon Adventure. And read the whole book of The Old Man and The Sea. Got home at 3. 4:00 - Land of the Giants. 5:00 - Bubble Gym Digest. 6:00 - Dick Van Dyke. 6:30 - The Muppet Show. 7:00 - Holmes and Yoyo. 7:30 - Doc. At 8:00 I had to go downstairs to watch Mary Tyler Moore. 8:30 - Bob Newhart. At 9, I watched a little of The Carol Burnett Show. 10:30 - Saturday Night Live. Went to bed at 12:15. Bye for now.

I find it impossible that I read Old Man and the Sea in an hour. But at the time I was fancying myself a 'speed reader'. I basically was skimming books, not really reading them. And did I go to Garfield Ridge to get away from the 'weird girls' of the day before?

And please, does anyone remember Holmes and Yoyo? I must have been one of five people who watched it. It was just another one of those not very funny Saturday night shows for shut-ins.

Friday, September 24, 1976

I'm more tired than usual, so I'll make it brief. First school. After school I went to the library. There were these weird girls bugging me there, so I left at 5:30. On the way home I met Tom and we talked for a while. Got home at 6:00. I did hardly anything until 10:00 - Mary Hartman. 10:30 - Honeymooners. 11:00 - Dark Shadows. 11:30 - Night Gallery. Started reading Poseidon Adventure. Went to bed at 12:15. Bye for now.

I have absolutely no idea who Tom is. None. Nothing is jogging my memory about him.

Thursday, September 23, 1976

Today was a late day. In Science we talked about fire. In I.D. we too notes. Library was a bummer. For lunch we had Sloppy Joes. Then English/Reading, Math and History. After school went to the library. Must have stayed there for one and a half hours. Finished homework there. When I got back home I watched TV. 6:00 -Dick Van Dyke. 6:30, Paul called. He wanted for me to come over, but I wasn't feeling too good. When I said "No", Paul got mad, etc, etc, etc. 7:00 - Welcome Back Kotter. 7:30 - Read. 8:00 - Tony Randall Show. Read until 10. 10:00 - Mary Hartman. 10:30 - Read until I finished The Crystal Cave. 11:00 - Dark Shadows. Watched Night Gallery. Went to bed at 12:00 - Bye for Now.

If I added up the hours I watched Dark Shadows in my life I could have learned several languages!

And the more I remember Paul, the more I remember him being a jerk.

And somehow I think there must have been a correlation between my not feeling well and the school lunch Sloppy Joes.

Wednesday, September 22, 1976

This morning was cold but it warmed up. Science; All he does is talk! I.D, we had to take notes. Gym; first exercises, then kicking. When we started to leave some kids started talking, so we had to do more exercises. We didn't have lunch to 11:30. 12:30-1:30 Reading/English. 1:30 - Math. 2:10 - Social Studies. 3:00 - Saw a rabbit at Paul's house. Gave Jay a ride home. I just relaxed after school. Did homework from five to six. 7:00 - Bionic Woman. 8:00 - All in the Family. Read from 9 to 10. 10:00 - Mary Hartman. 11:00 Dark Shadows. Figured out that in 2043 I'll be 80 years old.

Went to bed at 11:30.

Tuesday, September 21, 1976

Today was a bummer. First I had to bring Paul's shoes to his house. The door was locked so I left them on the air conditioner. School was the same: Science, I.d. Music, all bores. Then lunch; Paul was mad because I left the shoes on the air conditioner.

Then English and Reading, Math, and History. Gave Jay a ride home again. 4:00 started to the library but saw Tom. I walk with him on his paper route. 4:30 - Went to the library. I was dizzy, so I didn't read. I asked about getting a job, but they said that I would have to be 16 years old. So there goes that idea.

7:00 - Paul come over and we watched Happy Days. 8:00 Rich Man, Poor Man, part 2. 10:00 - Mary Hartman. 10:30 I tried to fix the TV. Everybody is mad at me, and they went to sleep early. Now I have to listen to Dark Shadows on the radio. B.S!

I'm not sure if everyone was mad at me because I tried to fix the tv and broke it? I did have a radio that was able to get in TV signals. It was my saving grace in the dark days of not having a television set.

Monday - September 20, 1976

First of all, while going to school I saw Jay. I gave him a ride to school on my bike. In Science, he (the teacher) was mad at the room for some reason. We took notes in I.D. In gym, my arm hurt from bowling. Lunch is a bore. O'Keefe just gave us an assignment and made us read some thing. Math is the same. Then we had Social Studies.

Gave Jay a ride home. 3:30 Watched Dinah. 5:15 - Started home worked, finished by 6:00. Watched Emergency, then the Odd Couple. 7:00 - Airport 75. 9:00 - Van Dyke and Company. 10:00 - Mary Hartman. 10:30 - Washed my hair. 11:00 - Dark Shadows.

Didn't read for two days. Tomorrow I might join Drama. Must get up at 7:45. Today was cold and cloudy, about 70 degrees. Went to bed at 12:00. 11:30 - Night Gallery.

Interesting how a teacher could just be mad at his room, and the students have no idea why. And what sort of homework did I have that it only took me 45 minutes? Granted I wasn't the best student. I think I barely made a C average.

Sunday - September 19, 1976

Woke up at 9:30, watched Casper. 10:00 - Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. 11:00 - Jetsons. 12:00 - Cheryl told me to help her take the pool down. It was a messy job. 12:45 - Paul called and asked me if I wanted to come to his house. I said, "Yes". Got there at 1:20. After a while Paul wanted to go bowling. At first I didn't want to go, but I went. Stayed there 20 minutes, bowled 49 points. When we got home Cheryl said that Randy and Ray were here. So we went looking for them, but we didn't find them. Paul stayed for about an hour, then it started to rain, so he had to go home.

Gene and Eydie came over. Watched Six Million Dollar Man. Then "Sky Terror". 10:00 ate watermelon, listed to a CBS Radio Mystery Theatre. Today was hot but cloudy. Didn't read. Went to bed at 11:45.

Raymond (last name Mou (sp?)), was another classmate of mine. Randy seemed to be better friends with him at the time. The two of them were like a stand up team. Both of them did celebrity imitations, and generally acted like they wanted to be on the Tonight Show. Ray however had extremely strict parents, so it was rare that we ever saw him outside of school. I wonder how he turned out.

Gene is my brother and Eydie his wife. Gene is 20 years older than me, and this scene is typical of something that we would do together. They would come over out of an obligation to see my parents. And we would almost always watch whatever Made-For-TV movie was playing that night. I'm assuming this is what we watched: Link

And throughout this whole diary you'll notice that I'm listening almost every night to the CBS Radio Mystery Theater.
Those of us of a certain age may remember this as the last gasp for American radio drama. They ran at 10:30 every night on WBBM-AM. Recently, I purchased all of the available shows on mp3. They still hold up. It was the show that got me interested in radio dramas.

September 18, 1976

Got up at 10:00. Watched TV to 11:00. Then Cheryl asked me if I wanted to go to North Riverside Mall with her. We left at 11:30. Must have went everywhere. To was a bore all day; Cheryl was looking for clothes. We got home at 5:30. Oh, yes, when we were at the store I read to page 232. At 7:00 Dad came home from his week long vacation. At 7:00 I listed to a radio mystery. At 8:00 I watched a dumb movie called "Die Monster Die". 9:30 - Love American Style. 10:00 - I called Paul he was sleeping, so I only talked for five minutes. 10:30 - Saturday Night Live. Went to bed at 12:15. Weather was 80 degrees and clear. I'm thinking of asking for a job at the library.

Shopping with my older sister I recall with true boredom. Sitting for hours in store after store while she tried on clothes. I find it hilarous that I read over a hundred pages in that huge book while I waited. The other thing I find interesting is I have no memory of my father ever going off on a vacation by himself. Where, with whom?

and I'm glad I thought of getting a job at the library I didn't realize I spent so much time there. Even from an early age I was well ahead of my level in reading. I think in the third grade I was reading at a high school level. by the time I was 13 I'd read every dirty book in the library. The dirtiest being a book called "Providence Island" about one man and two women deserted on a island. The hitch was that one of the woman was a lesbian. I should see if I can get this book and re-read it, as I think it would explain a lot about me.

September 17, 1976

School is the same. First Science, then I.D. We mass produced 15 coat hangers. Then Music; A bore, I almost fell asleep. Lunch. In English we had a spelling test; then we had to read. I read "The Crystal Cave" to page 69. Math we had a substitute teacher. Social Studies is a bore.

On the way home Keith, Jay, and I rode home. Me on the handlebars, and Jay and Keith on the seat. When i got home I went to the library and statyed there an hour and a half. Read to page 118. Came home watched: 7:00 Lost in Space, 8:00 - Love Boat. 10:00 - Mary Hartman. At 10:30 read to page 166. 11:00 - Dark Shadows. Went to bed at 12:30. Must read more tomorrow. Bye for now.

I barely remember anything about Jay. But I think he was one of the people who I was friend with who in high school snubbed me. My last memory of him is in a powder blue tux at prom. "The Crystal Cave" was some really long book about Merlin.

September 16, 1976

Today was an average day. Not much happened. First school. I.D we made a coathanger. Mine was lopsided. Library, then lunch. Paul showed me his new glasses. They look like mine, but they're gold. Horshack is still nutty. After school watched, "Bell, Book, and Candle". At 7:30 Paul came over to do homework. At 9:30 read "Vampires". 10:00 - Mary Hartman. 10:30 - Read. 11:00 - Dark Shadows. 11:30 - Got ready for bed and finished "Vampires". Went to bed at midnight.
Bye for now.

Horshack was the Social Studies teacher that I said was like one of the Marx Sisters. She was probably the first Jewish person I ever met!

September 15, 1976

School seems to be shorter. Lunch was a bore. After school me and Paul went to the library to do homework. He left at 5:00, but I stayed until 6:00 to finish "Fantastic Voyage"; and started "Vampires". Bye for now

September 14, 1976

Not much happened. First I had school, which is a bore. After school I went to the library to return a book. I walked, then I forgot the book. Now there is a due on it. Bye for now.

September 13, 1976

Almost forgot to write. To tired to write. Nothing happened. Randy came over. Didn't do much. Me and Brown talked at lunch. Tomorrow in school we work with clay in I.D. Bye for now.

I think that I.D. was the industrial arts class. Mystery solved.

September 12, 1976

Tomorrow is a new week. Today I went to Paul's house. When telephone rang with a call for his sister. Paul said, That Cindy wasn't home" but she was home. She got so mad that she didn't stop kicking and punching him. Finally, she stopped. After a while we went to my house to read this. Then I ate; then we did homework.

Well, that's all the news.

Paul's sister Cindy was a mess. Both Paul's sister and brother were major drinkers and potheads. They seemed much older, but they must have only been 15 or 16. I remember this incident because she totally freaked out about this phone call and went insane.

Years later when I was at Paul's father's funeral he told me that the ghost of his father appeared to his sister the night before. It's a surprising thing to hear, so I said, "Really, did he want to say something to her?" Paul said, "He told her that she was a disappointment and that she'd never amount to anything. ". That's what a mess she was, her own father had to come from beyond the grave to lecture his screwed up daughter.

September 11, 1976

Went downtown with Keith and Randy. First we went to the radio station. They told us the records were not in. So Randy and me went down the stairs, Keith didn't; well he got lost. I think for fifteen minutes we were going up and down the elevators -- we got in trouble.

Then to the lake and back, they still weren't there. Went to the Water Tower Place. Randy and Keith must have ditched me ten times. Went back to the station and got the records. On the way home we first took the el, we got on the wrong one, then we got on the right one. Took a bus to Archer, then we had to wait for another one. When we got off we got food. When Keith got home he got in trouble for being so late. I only got in a little because it was 7:00. We left at 10:15 a.m.; brought home 20 records.

__________

Randy is notorious for making me do go places that we shouldn't during this time. Up and down staircases, in elevators, on the roofs of buildings all over the city. I remember that often going downtown meant being ditched and having to run all over the place to find them. I think throughout the years I was kicked out of the Water Tower Place, the Cultural Center, Marina Towers and the Sears Tower for playing 'ditch' in their elevators.

Again, the issue with the records and the radio station is that I was supplying records to the Dick Lawrence radio show. I must have been either picking up records I left there, or borrowing some of his records.

September 10, 1976

Today I saw Brown. I wouldn't have believed it if someone told me. Cathy is slim. We can't call here Cow anymore. Also we are going downtown tomorrow. School is the same old thing. Keith came over. He said that we could carry a lot of records downtown. Must go movie is on.

Cathy Brown was this chubby girl who in the 6th grade had a crush on me. As I was more interested in pulling Keith's pants down I didn't show much interest. I remember that after she got thin (I love how I say 'she is slim') she sort of snubbed me.

September 9, 1976

Must make it brief, because Aunt Celila and (I forget her name) are here. Well school was a long bore. Nothing new. Read From the Earth to the Moon. It was o.k. That's all the news.

P.S. I just remembered her named; it's Cee Cee and we had I.D.

I don't know what I.D. meant. Later on in the diary I know I use codes for dirty stuff. But no clue what I.D. is.

September 8, 1976

Today was hot. That made school worse. First period was science. All he did was talk. We stayed there for two periods. Then we had gym. Lunch went quick. Then we had language arts with Mr. O'Keefe; I was nervous but I made a good impression. Then math, it was o.k. Then Social Science. The teacher reminded me of the of the Marx Sisters.

When we got out I walked with Keith and Randy to get my bike at Paul's house. I thought I was going to get killed the way he rides. I may get a call from Paul. Me, Keith and Randy are going downtown on Sunday.

__________

Paul I knew from the 1st grade. He was a big dumb ass, and stayed that way even into his 20s when I last saw him. Randy I had just met, but we remain close friends for 30 years. He's nuts, but hilarious. Keith was this guy who I remember had really bad, dirty body odor. My mother hated that I was friends with him, he was definitely a troublemaker. His mother was a go-go boot wearing, cocktail waitress. Keith used to show me his dick all the time. It was huge and thick, and he was proud to show it off. Last I heard of him he was a garage mechanic somewhere by Midway Airport.

First Entry

In 1976, I read Dracula which is a book that is completely told through diary entries. It impressed me so much that at age 13 I decided it was time I marked the drama of my young life down in print. I've carried this torn up red book, that I bought at Stewart's 5&10 on 63rd street that summer, around with me everywhere I've lived. In fact, about ten years ago I did an auto-biographical piece using the entries and singing themes from the TV shows of the day. If you read these regularly you'll see that mostly this is a fascinating look at what a non-typical 13 year old with much time and few friends watched. I'll start with the beginning, and post a couple every day until I can catch up to the current date, then I'll post as the days correspond. (Thanks Dave for giving me this great idea). I'll comment to clarify in italics.

So enjoy!

Tuesday, September 7, 1976

This is my first entry in this diary. Tomorrow is the first day of school. Cheryl is sick with a cold. Everybody is telling me to go to bed, so I went downstairs to watch 'Dark Shadows' and to write in here. Talked to Dick Lawrence for 15 minutes today.
I don't want to go to school, but I have to. I wonder what will happen; it will be written down here. I will tell you what happened.
__________

Cheryl is my older sister. Dick Lawrence was a local radio announcer who used to play old 78s in the afternoons on FM radio. I used to bug him all the time. He was a sweet guy to talk to me. I had a collection of 78s at the time and I used to go down to the station to give him some of the records to play on his show. For a 13 year old hearing me thanked on the air for letting him play things from my collection was a huge thrill. It's funny how years later I was doing the same thing for Ira Glass and This American Life. It's one of my favorite memories from that time.
