Friday, December 24, 1976

I must make a decision. What about I will tell you later. Woke at 10:00, but went back to bed at 11:00. Woke again at 12:30. Let's skip the afternoon (I'm very tired now) On WIND, they played A Christmas Carol with Lionel Barrymore. 7:00 - Mr Magoo's Christmas Carol. 8-9:30 - Off and on watched Chester's Mystery Plays. 9:30- For a half hour read A Christmas Carol.

10:00- My favorite episode of Mary Hartman. Everything good happened. 10:30- Mystery Theatre did a version of A Christmas Carol. 12:00- Midnight Mass. 1:00- For once we opened our presents on Christmas Eve. I got a Monster Movie Book and a very fancy diary. So should I stop this one at the end of the year or go on. I don't know.

Went to bed at 4:10.

This must have been the year I was obsessed to see/hear/read every version of A Christmas Carol.

and I didn't stop writing in the raggedy red diary. I've no idea where the fancy diary went to.

Thursday, December 23, 1976

Something happened during the night. Yesterday I was feeling good, but during the night my nose was so clogged it hurt. It was like my whole body hurt. So I didn't go to school. There was a party at school today too, so I missed it (Oh, well).

Woke at 12:30 - Watched Casper. 1:00- Green Acres. 1:30 - Lucy. 2:00 - Beverly Hillbillies. 2:30- Match Game. 3:00- Popeye. 3:30- "Getting Away From It All" 5:00- My Favorite Martian. 6:00- Dick Van Dyke. 6:30- Odd Couple. 7:00 - Meet Me in St. Louis (I taped it). 9:00- Merv Griffin. 10:00- Mary Hartman. 10:30- Androcles and the Lion . 12:10 - Listened to Ed Schwartz. 1:10 - 2:30 - The Boogyman Will Get You If You Don't Watch Out

I'd just recently watched The Boogyman movie. It's funny because it a childhood favorite of a friend of mine. I swore I never saw it. And had no memory of seeing it. It was pretty forgettable.

Wednesday, December 22, 1976

Today was weird. Got out of school at 10:45, so that the teachers could get paid. In I.A. worked on a crossword puzzle. Gym, didn't do anything; just sat around. 11:00- Watched Daley's funeral. 12:00- Casper. 1:30 - Green Acres. 2:30 - 3:30 Popeye. 5:00- My Favorite Martian. 6:00- Homework while I listened to my tape of "Look: We've Come Through".

9:00- Paul called. 10:00- Mary Hartman. 10:30- - Took a bath, while listening to Mystery Theatre.

I'm not reading "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court", because it was too boring.

Tuesday, December 21, 1976

IN I.A. raced Dykel and won with my car. History, took test that I should have taken Wednesday. After school, "How to Steal a Million Dollars" part 2. Listened to tapes all afternoon. 7:00 - Happy Days. 7:30 - Laverne and Shirley. 8:00- Rich Man, Poor Man. 10:00- Mary Hartman. 10:30 - Look: We've Come Through.

12:15 - Tomorrow Show. Went to bed at 1:10.

I'm making an effort to link movies and tv shows to when I can. But it's interesting that some stuff isn't even mentioned, such as Look: We've Come Through...

Also a word about the afternoon movies. Channel 7 used to show movies every day at 3:30. And they had a awful habit of just cutting the movies to pieces. They would show something like Hitchcock's "Torn Curtain" but break it up into two separate days, and still cut out a half-hour of the movies. Roger Ebert wrote scathing articles about this practice. The Channel 7 afternoon movie is probably best known for starting the career of Freddie Silverman uber producer of NBC in the late 70s. He had this idea of putting on a week of big monkey movies: King Kong, Mighty Joe Young, Son of Kong. And some guy in a monkey suit introduced them. It was a huge hit. And from there he went on to Super Train.

Monday, December 20, 1976

Mayor Daley is dead from a heart attack. I woke at 12:45. I didn't go to school today because the side streets were too full of snow. 1:00 - Christmas Parade in Hollywood. 2:30 - Mayor Daley was in a restaurant and he had a heart attack. 3:30 We found that he died, while I was watching "How To Steal a Million Dollars" . Listened to part of the Anne Frank diary that I have on tape. 7:00 - Rhoda. 7:30 Phyllis. 8:00- Maude. 10:00 - Mary Hartman. 10:30- Mystery Theatre; the story was about a heart attack victim.

Forgot to put in here what I got on my car; a C+.

It was such a huge deal with Daley died. He'd been mayor for my whole life. I remembered his death recently when I finally saw all of How to Steal a Million Dollars.

Sunday - December 19, 1976

Woke at 12:00. Ate at 1:00. 2:00- Paul came over and we played Masterpiece to 4. 5:00- Paul left. 6:15 - Randy left. Watched Babes in Toyland. 7:00- Christmas Around the World. 9:30 - Homework. 10:00- No Honestly. 10:30 - Horror Express, the first half hour the sound was off. Went to bed at 12:30.

For spooky UHF horror movies "Horror Express" is one of my favorites. I saw it a couple years ago and it still scared me.

Saturday, December 18, 1976

Woke at 12:00. didn't do anything all afternoon. 7:00 - Mame. 8:30 - Randy came over, we watched Mame until 10. 10:00 Paul called. We played Aggrevation until 12:00. Started playing films, the Super 8 ones on the editor and the 8mm on the screen. At 2AM we listened to records and stuff to 4:30 when we went to bed, but not to sleep. We were pushing each other off the bed and well we didn't get to sleep until about 6:00. Him on the chair and me on the couch.

Friday, December 17, 1976

Today was weird. Science, we had a sub. I.A. We were racing cards. My car wouldn't go. There is something wrong with the tracks. It's funny mind stayed there like a jerk. In History, we had a fire drill, had to stay after school for about 5 minutes.

The Xmas trees was put up today. They took back the amplipher for a better one and bought a turntable. I got a clock radio from the garage. I'm too tired to write anymore. Went to bed at 1:30.

Thursday, December 16, 1976

Woke at 11:15. Didn't go to school, but felt a lot better. 11:30 - The Gong Show. 12:00- Casper. 1:00- Green Acres. 1:30 - Love American Style. 4:00- Went with Mom, Auntie May and Mike to the indoor flea market. I bought two things for Cheryl; a cheap snoopy figurine and a razor blade on a chain. For me I got 9 comic books, and 2 records; a Edgar Bergen and an Eddie Cantor. Didn't do any of my homework. 10:00- Mary Hartman. Went to bed at 12:00.

Cher says my face is breaking out.

Wednesday, December 15, 1976

Didn't go to school today. My cold was worse in the afternoon. Felt a little better in the evening. Woke at 12:00. All day I just watched TV, listened to records, and started Frankenstein. Nothing happened all day. Felt a little bit better, but I'm dizzy.

I'm not sure if I'm going to school. So that's about all. Went to bed at about 11:30, but woke at 12:15 and read and finished Frankenstein. Went to bed at 1:15 and that's late!

I can't imagine what or how I read Frankenstein in one day; it's a pretty dense book. It must have been some dumbed down children's version.

Tuesday, December 14, 1976

Can't write much today. I.A. We are racing our cars tomorrow. After school, missed the car so I walked. It was warm. Felt bad all day; don't know if I'm going to school tomorrow. Finished "The Sentinel" 8:00- Ransom.

They are telling me to go to bed, so I'm sneaking the Mystery Theatre in my bed. Went to bed at 12:00 - Felt bad all night.

Monday - December 13, 1976

Woke at the same time I always do. 8:30 - 8:35. I'm usually a little late. Science, they put up the Xmas tree. I.A.; My car is the ugliest thing I've ever seen. Gym, played soccer. Lunch was indoor. Gave Campbell Soup Labels. History had a sub, Dulta. I remember him from the 5th grade, he was our sub then too.

All afternoon I was alone. 6:00 - Dick Van Dyke. 6:30 - Odd Couple. 7:00- Rhoda 7;30 -Phyllis. 8:00- The Judy Garland Show. 9:30- Finished homework. 10:00 - Mary Hartman. 10:30 - Mystery Theatre. Dad fixed my car to make it look a lot better. Went to bed at 12:30.

Do people still collect soup labels for schools? I'm out of the loop on that one.

And I remember my father fixing my car; it was sweet of him, but I think he was disgusted with me that I was such goof when it came to doing things with my hands.

Sunday, December 12, 1976

Woken by Cheryl, when she said we were going to the store. Went to the car at 12:00 but it wouldn't start, left at 1:00. Went to Ford City. didn't get anyone anything for Xmas, but Cher got her a record, Electric Light Orchestra. Got back at 4:00.

The old amplipher is mine now that we have the new one. 4:30- Lucy. 5:00- Ate spagetti and found out that Jack Cassidy was found burned to death in his apartment. Didn't do any homework. 6:30 - The new version of Peter Pan with Mia Farrow. 8:30 - 9:40 - Played Aggravation with Cheryl and Mike. 10:00- No Honestly. 10:30 - Monty Python. 11:30- Read to page 161. Went to bed at 12:25.

Saturday, December 11, 1976

Again, Randy didn't sleep over, but me might next week. I hope. Woke at around 12:00. Mom and Dad went to by a new amplifier that costs $475! They didn't get back until 3:15. 1:30-2:45 Watched "Day of the Humanoids" 2:45 - Judy Garland in Concert. 3:00 - Treasure. 4:00 - Worked on my car. 5:00- Beverly Hillbillies. 5:30 - Lucy. 6:00 - Dick Van Dyke Show. 6:30- Hollywood Squares. 7:00- Nature's Half Acre. 7:30- - Lt. Robin Crusoe, U.S.N. 9:00- Carol Burnett. 10:00- Called up Paul and talked to 10:30. 10:30- Saturday Night Live. 11:30 - The Remarkable Andrew 1:15 - Started to read "The Sentinel (to page 69) Went to bed at 2:05.

Friday, December 10, 1976

In science, the candidates in the school elections gave their speeches. I.A, painted car. Did it look crummy, it had bumps, runs, and everything else wrong. Music, found out that the school president is Ken Ducotis, Vice President is Janice Putnam; Secretary; Susan Gaydos. Treasurer: Daown Varante. In reading, finished GWTW.

Changed the color of my car it's Pacific Blue it was red. 8:00 - What's Up Doc. 10:00- Mary Hartman. 10:30- Mystery Theatre. Randy is sleeping here tomorrow. 11:30 - Gorath.

I'm sure that I've spelled the last names of the class candidates wrong; But I remember them as the kids in school who never seemed to have any problems; straight A's, later to be homecoming queens and kings. I guess I'm still bitter.

Thursday, December 9, 1976

Today was a bummer. Science, forgot to do 5 problems. Had to stay after school. I.A; just sat around. History, she gave us her impression of the slaves on the plantations. 3:00- Had to stay after school. Well half the room was there. Even Brown. I got out at 3:30, had to walk home. 4:30-5:30 - Talked to Randy. 5:30 - Hazel. 6:00 - Worked on car. 6:30 - In Search of Easter Island Massacre. 7:30 - Van Dyke and Company. 7:40- Paul called. 9:10-9:30 started on my essay on The Tell-Tale Heart. Finished at 11:00. 10:00- Mary Hartman. 10:30 - Mystery Theatre. I lost the key to this diary, so my secrets are not safe.

Went to bed at 12:05.

My imagination reels when it thinks what a history teacher's impression of black plantation slaves in an all-white school in 1976 was like.

and my secrets really aren't safe now!

Wednesday, December 8, 1976

Science cleaned test tubes. I.A. painted my car; it was running all over the place. The car that is. Gym, got out of it by having a stomach ache. Lunch it was indoor. English/Reading, Math got a 63 on a test.

After school worked on painting my car. Oh yes! I'm going to have my own locker today. So I'm not going to be with Randy Dykel. 7-8 I did homework. 8:00- Carpenters. 9:00- worked on my car. 10:00 - Mary Hartman; Tom raped Mary. 10:30 - Mystery Theatre. Went to bed at 12:15.

I vaguely recall that Randy Dykel was removed as my locker-mate because they thought he was going to be a bad influence.

Tuesday, December 7, 1976

Science, took notes. I.A; sanded. In English/Reading he read us a story and in that class we had pictures taken. Math had a test. After school went to the library. Read GWTW to page 920. Got books like The Sentinel and Frankenstein, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court and Tales by Poe. When we got out of school some kid was skeeching on our car. ( I knew the kid) They thought could because she (my mother) never yelled at them before. But she did this time. It was so embarrassing.

This is the 3rd month of writing. 7:00- Watched Treasure. 8:00- a show about Chicago comedy. 10:00- Mary Hartman. 10:30 Mystery Theatre. Went to bed at 12:05.

I think that everyone who lives in a part of the country where there is heavy snowfalls will know about "skeeching"; Although I've heard it called other things. It's where the streets are packed with ice and snow and when a car is going down the street you run up behind it and grab on to the bumper and bend down letting the car drag you along. It's been years since I've seen anyone do this. Maybe because we haven't had bad winters for a while, or the street clean-up is more efficient. But I remember it drove my mother nuts when kids did this, rightly so... it was really dangerous.

Monday - December 6, 1976

Snowed all day. Science worked with gas again. I.A. Sanded my car. During lunch Wallis grabbed my sandwich, so I couldn't eat it. Afterschool I listened to my records. 5:00- My Favorite Martian. 5:30 - Called Randy. 7:00- Rhoda. 7:30- Phyllis. 8:00- Judy Garland in Concert. 9:00- I fooled around with the editor. 10:00- Mary Hartman. 10:30 - Mystery Theatre. Went to bed at 12:00.

Sunday - December 5, 1976

Woke at 12:00 - Didn't do much just sat around and watched TV. 12:00 - I Spy, I think this was the first time I'd watched it. 1:00 - Legend of Valentino. 2-3:30 - watched Valentino in Blood and Sand. 3:30 - Superman. 4:00 - a bit of Lucy. 4:30- Beverly Hillbillies. 5:00- 1/2 hour of The Family and Other Things. 6:00- Hour of Journey Back to Oz. 7:00 - Paul came over we worked on sanding our cars. 8:30 - he left. Called Randy, but he didn't say hardly anything. 10:10 - No Honestly. 10:30- Mystery Theatre. Went to bed at 12:30.

Saturday, December 4, 1976

Fell asleep a little earlier while watching a movie, so don't know when I fell asleep. Randy didn't sleep over, because I guess it was too late and he couldn't get a ride. Woke at 10:20, watched Big John, Little John. 11:00 - Land of the Lost. 12:30 - Listened to San Francisco, but something is wrong with that tape machine. Read up to page 839. 4:15 - 5, channel 11 was showing old films. 5:00- Beverly Hillbillies. 5:30 - Lucy. 7:00- watched South Pacific, until 8:30. 9:00 - Carol Burnett. 10:00 - The Picnic Went to bed at 1:25.

I remember that San Francisco was one of my favorite movies that I'd taped to act out because it had a big earthquake at the end; I'd throw myself all over the basement toppling down the wall of pillows I'd made.

Friday, December 3, 1976

Well today it snowed from the time I got up to about 6PM. Science did experiment with gas. I.A.; Forgot my car. Music, a bore. All the class candidates are still campaigning. Spelling, Reading read to page 796. Math, History; mass produced peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. 3:30 - 4:10 - talked to Randy, he may sleep over tomorrow. 5:00 - My Favorite Martian. 7:00- Donny and Marie. 7:30 - Beauty and the Beast. 9:00 - Listened to my tape of Abbott and Costello Meet the Killer. 10:00 -Mary Hartman. 11:30 - Watched Disciple of Death. Went to bed at 1:30.

Thursday, December 2, 1976

I want to keep it short because I want to watch "You Can't Cheat an Honest Man". So what else can I say. Went to bed at 12:00.

Tuesday, January 9, 2007

Wednesday, December 1, 1976

Snowed all day, Science. I.A.; worked on my car. Gym had to write a composition on conduct (see Monday). Lunch, outside. English, Reading. Someone tripped me in the hall, my books fell and I fell flat on my face. I sprained my knee.

Afterschool I worked on my car. From 5:45 - 6:15 listened to Classical music. 6:30 -Called Dick Lawrence. 7:30 - Bionic Woman. 8:00 - Worked on car. 9:00 - 10:00- Read to page 712. 10:00 - Mary Hartman. 10:30 - Never Give a Sucker an Even Break. Went to bed at 12:05.

The being pushed down was just the start of a high school of abuse...

Tuesday, November 30, 1976

Today as the same. In Science, got in trouble for haivng my work. I.A. Broke my axle housing, but later I fixed it. Music, Mrs. Particle told us about the school election. Lunch, was indoor. English, Reading, Math, History.

Afterschool, 4:00 - Randy called, we talked for an hour. 5:00- My Favorite Martian. 7:00 - Happy Days. 7:30 - Laverne and Shirley. 8:00- Rich Man, Poor Man Book 2. 9:00 - Worked on my car. 9:30- Paul called and we talked to 10:00. 10:00- Mary Hartman; yesterday Charlie left Loretta. 10:30- My Little Chickadee. Went to bed at 12:10.

Monday, November 29, 1976

Went to school, but I did feel a little better. In Science, started a new chapter. It seemed strange going back to school. Like it was a very long time ago since we were in class. I.A. Worked with my car. Gym, had subsititute, everyone was noisy, so we went to our old English room 2B. We have to sit there and write. Lunch was indoor because it was only 1 degree this morning. Math had a substitute. History got a 100 on my test.

3:30 - Dinah, Mary Kaye Place was on there she has a record out. Called Randy, he's sleeping here in two weeks. 7:30 - Phyllis. 8:00 - The Front Page. 10:30 - Mary Hartman. 10:30 - Took a bath. 11:30 - 12:00 - Watched the end of The Bank Dick. Went to bed at 12:20 - Cher's got lady problems.

I adored Mary Kaye Place on Mary Hartman. I'm saving stuff up for a blog post on Mary Hartman.

Sunday, November 28, 1976

Woke up late today at 12:15. At 1:30 - Watched a rerun of The Witch's Curse. 3:00 -Listened to a tape of Mystery Theater. 4:30 - Beverly Hillbillies. 6:30- Let's Make a Deal. 7:00 - CBS: Salute to Lucy's First 25 Years.

I found out that Rosalind Russell died of cancer today.

10:00 - Get Smart 10:30 - Watched Mae West's I'm No Angel.

I feel a little better today, but I still have the chills and a small fever and sore throat. I can't seem to want to read anymore, but I must finish Gone With the Wind.

I hope I don't have to go to school tomorrow. It seems I'm always sick on Friday, worse on Saturday then better on Sunday. Then on Monday I'm well. Went to bed at 12:20. Bye for Now.

Saturday, November 27, 1976

Today felt worse than yesterday. Woke at 10:45 and watched Little John, Big John. 11:00 - Land of the Lost 11:30 - Mugsy. 10:40 - 1:30 - layed down. 2:30- 5:30 - Listened to some old Mystery Theatre's that I taped about three years ago. 5:30 - Lucy. 6:00 - Sorting it Out. 6:30 - Hollywood Squares. 7:00 - Paul called and wanted to come over. 7;30 - Bob Newhart Show. 8:00 - The Masque of the Red Death. 10:00 -The Honeymooners. 10:30 - I switched around a lot, like I watched Saturday Night and David Suskind. He had on Mel Brooks and other Jews. At 12:25, Watched "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane" Went to bed at 2:30, didn't watch the last half hour.

I must have been sick if I didn't watch the end of Whatwever Happened to Baby Jane.

The David Suskind Show (No one ever talks about David Suskind anymore) with Mel Brooks was a show from 1969 where all these famous Jewish comedians basically told their favorite jokes and stories for an hour and a half. Suskind showed this show every year. Someone needs to find this and release it; I remember my parents would make a point to watch the repeat every year.

and I have no memory of the show Little John, Big John. The plot seems ripe for an Adam Sandler remake. And it also shows that I'd watch damn near anything!

Wednesday, January 3, 2007

Friday, November 26, 1976

Woke at 12:00. Watched Casper. Felt sick all day. I must be coming down with a cold. During the afternoon I listened to my tape of "The Haunting". 5:00 - Ate. 6:30 - Paul came over we played Trouble. He left at 9:00. 9:00 - Merv Griffin. 10:00 - Mary Hartman. 10:30 - Read to page 650. 11:30 - 12:00 - Tonight Show. 12:20 - Fahrenheit 456. Went to bed at 2:00.

Thursday, November 25, 1976

Well, today's Thanksgiving. I woke at 11:30. Watched TV cartons like Casper. I'm not going to finish My Cousin Rachel (maybe). At 3:00 - The Odd Couple. 3:30 - Mike came over and we watched The Boy with the Green Hair. Gene and Eydie came later about 4. Ate at 5 (turkey). 6:30 - In Search of Dracula. 7:00 - Hans Christian Anderson, until 8:30. Then until ten listened to my tape of Funny Girl. 10:00 - Mary Hartman. 10:30 - Tonight Show. 12:00 - the movie "Inn of the Sixth Happiness". Went to bed at 1:30.

Among my other taping projects was to tape movie soundtracks off of the television. I remember I had Funny Girl, Poseidon Adventure, the Marx Bros' Monkey Business, and The Haunting. All of which I would act out in the basement.

Wednesday, November 24, 1976

Another day, tomorrow's Thanksgiving, in case I forgot late.

Well in Science did experiment with a bag, shells and Hydrocloric Acid. I.A. worked on the car; I cut through my axle housing. Gym, then lunch; Didn't do anything but sit around. English/Reading; read Gone with the Wind to him again.

After school I was taping books. I'd start one then another until I started My Cousin Rachel. I hope I finish it.

7:00 - Flood. 9:00- Taped the book. 10:00 - Mary Hartman; Mary isn't going to get Cathy's baby. 10:30 - Read. Went to bed at 1:10.

Maybe it was the reading to my English teacher, but I got it in my head that I was going to read aloud novels into a tape recorder. I think I might have gotten about ten pages into My Cousin Rachel before I got bored. I wonder where those tapes are today?

Tuesday, November 23, 1976

Can't write much today. Woke up late. Today was the same. Weeks go by so fast. I.A. Worked with band saw. Music, had music in Mr. O'Keefe's room because Topel's room had no heat. Might as well skip the rest.

From 7:00 - 10 - Did homework while I watched: Happy Days; Laverne and Shirley; Rich Man, Poor Man. 10:00 - Mary Hartman: Mary's thinking of adopting Cathy's baby. 10:30 - Mystery Theatre. Went to bed at 12:10.

Lady in the Cage was on tonight. And I couldn't watch it again!

I'm not sure if Mr. Topel will come up again, so I'll address this now. Mr. Topel was my teacher in music appreciation this year. I'll never as long as I live forget that class because it was a perfect example of the Chicago School System. I don't know what music meant in earlier years, but in the 70s it meant sitting in a classroom listening to records. First we listened to classical pieces, then some jazz. But the class was always restless, so Mr. Topel decided that from now on we would listen to what we wanted to hear. Which I supposed today would be called Classic Rock.

He'd play Areosmith, or Earth Wind and Fire, Boston. All the hits, and then we would sit in a classroom at desks and sing along. I can't hear "Cold as Ice" without thinking of sitting there mouthing the words while people sang around me. I recall, once the class wanted to sing Play That Funky Music White Boy... but that another class had already sung it while the principal was walking down the hall. Of course, they sang, "Play that Fucky Music..." That was the end of pop songs for a while.

Monday - November 22, 1976

Science, had a substitute that was a Kinzie high school graduate. I.A, used a drill. My hands now smell like smoke because the wood started to burn. Got a 72 on test in History. 3:30 - Dinah. 7:00 - Peanuts Thanksgiving Special. 8:00 - Savage Bees. 10:00 - Mary Hartman, then Mystery Theatre. 11:30 - Tonight Show. Went to bed at 12:10.
