Friday, January 21, 1977

Today was a day of tests. We did an experiment with screws in Science. I.A. test, got a S+. Then music, what a bore. Finished Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. History test.

5:00 - My Favorite Martian. 5:30 - Big Blue Marble. 6:00- I Love Lucy. 6:30 - Get Smart. 7:00 - Things to Come, one of my favorite movies. 9:00- Love Boat II. 10:00- Mary Hartman.
10:30 - Tonight Show. 12:30 - Vampire Circus. Went to bed at 2:00.

Thursday, January 20, 1977

It's Inaugural Day. Carter is our new president. Today was a late day. We had a puppet show today from 9:30 - 10:30. Aesop's Fables. It was pretty good, but it was made for younger kids.

Started Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde in English/Reading.

After school I danced twice to Rhapsody in Blue. 5:30- Big Blue Marble. 6:00- I Love Lucy. 7:00 - Monsters: Real or Myths. 9:00- Watched a re-run of the inaugural. 10:00- Mary Hartman. 10:30 - Mystery Theatre, for a 1/2 hour but I'd heard it before. Read Knock on Any Door to page 176. Went to be at 12:15.

I remember Mr. O'Keefe when ever he would talk about Dr. Jekyll would pronounce his name "Jee-kel" With a long 'e' sound. It drove me nuts.

And another embarrasing admission: I used to really dance around to Rhapsody in Blue. I'd invented some story about a princess or something and I'd run around the basement using furniture throws as dresses and jumping on pillows. I used to do it over and over.

and why did it take me until I was 22 to admit to myself I was gay!

Wednesday, January 19, 1977

I.A. had substitute. Gym, I forgot to put on gym shoes this morning, so I didn't have gym. Lunch was indoors.

After school Aunt Fran and Aunt Anna were here. 5:00 - My Favorite Martian. 5:30- Big Blue Marble. 6:00- I Love Lucy. 7:00 - Bionic Woman. 9:00- Homework. 10:00- Mary Hartman. 10:30 - Mystery Theatre. Read Knock on Any Door to page 105.

Both Aunt Fran (my Uncle Bruno's wife) and Aunt Anna (my mother's sister) are long dead. Aunt Fran reminded me of a female version of Arthur Godfrey. Short, always smoking, with a harsh nasal voice. Aunt Anna was a small petite woman who was a lot like Molly Picon. They both made me nervous; my Aunt Anna was 20 years older than my mother, so she would have been in her seventies at the time. I remember thinking that I could catch 'old' from her...

Tuesday, January 18, 1977

Well today was like any other day. School was the same. Everything is the same. The only thing was in History the teacher wanted "Roots" the book from the library. Walis was going to get it. I had to go to the library anyway, so I went. He wasn't there. The book wasn't there. I got a book of O'Henry stories. I also got a cassette of Burns and Allen and Mrs. Goldberg. Listened to them at 8:00.

10:00 - Mary Hartman. 10:30- Tale of Two Cities was on the radio, but I didn't finish it. Went to bed at 12:30.

Sorry that above story is confusing to me too... I have no idea why Walis had to go to the library to get Roots? Nevermind...

Monday, January 17, 1977

Cher is so stupid. She bought a bed without thinking where she was going to put it. So it's in my bedroom against my wall. My bed is against the window. It's going to stay there until August or until they find an apartment. So here I am sitting in my cramped room. My bed feels strange, like it isn't my bed. I don't want to write much today, so bye for now.

Started "Knock on Any Door".

That huge king size bed did stay in my bedroom until way after my sister got married. I think it was the beginning of feeling like I didn't matter much because of my sister's upcoming wedding. I was slowly coming invisible. After the bed, other wedding apartment things started being put into my bedroom like it was a storage room.

Knock on Any Door was a great book. I should re-read it. One thing I remember from it was one of the characters peeing and reading on a stall door: "No matter how much you shake and dance, the last few drops go down your pants." Funny the things you remember.

Sunday, January 16, 1977

I was cold. VERY COLD!!!! It was 20 degrees below zero at it's lowest. Woke at 11:30. Three Stooges until 12. Laid down until 12:45 there was ice on all the bedroom windows. At 3:00 - Gene and Eydie came over. Gene was monkeying around with the phonograph, then about 4:30 I showed Eydie Cheryl's pictures. One thing led to another and soon all our family pictures were out. By the time we were done looking at them it was 6:30. 7:00- Rhoda. 7:30 - Phyllis. 10:30 - Mystery Theatre, another O'Henry Story. Went to bed at 12:00.

Saturday, January 15, 1977

I'm getting gray. It's seems funny, but I am. I don't want to write today, but I will. Woke at 11:00. 1:30 - The Head That Wouldn't Die. 3:00 - The World of Abbott and Costello. 4:30 - Green Acres. 5:00 - David Copperfield, part 1. 6:00 - The Goodies. 6:30 - David Copperfield, part 2. 7:00 - Mary Tyler Moore. 7:30 - Bob Newhart. 8:00- Black Sabbath. Paul called at 9:30. 10:30 - The Old Fashioned Way. 12:00- You're Telling Me. Went to to bed at 2:15. Oh yes! We went out for pizza at 11:30.

So according to this diary entry I was sitting in front of the TV almost 12 hours non-stop, except for a short break to talk on the phone and eat pizza... no wonder I was going grey.

I didn't go pre-maturely grey... but I always had these 15 strands of hair on the side that were grey... I think they fell out a few years ago... because I don't see them now...

Friday, January 14, 1977

Oh My God!!! My mother found this diary. I must have left it out at night; I don't know what she read, if she read anything at all.

So in school the same old thing. I'm not reading, First Men in the Moon. 5:00 -My Favorite Martian. 6:00 - I Love Lucy. 6:30 - Get Smart. 7:00- The Front Page (1934 version). 9:00 - Fantasy Island. 10:00 - Mary Hartman. 10:30 - Giant Gila Monster. Went to bed at 1:00.

My mother never had much respect for my privacy. She would often read my diary and then comment to me about stuff later on. Years later when I was a senior in high school she read another diary I kept and I wrote something like "keep your nose out of my stuff bitch"... she didn't talk to me for two weeks, but she couldn't tell me why she was mad because she would have to had admitted that she was reading my diary. Ah, adolescence.

Thursday, January 13, 1977

Didn't do much but finish The Invisible Man. 5:00- My Favorite Martian. 5:30-6:30 - Homework. 6:30 - In Search of Ancient Fliers. 7:00- Homework. 7:30 - Called Paul. 8:00 - Nova: Warm Blooded Dinosaurs. 9:00- 10:00- Homework. 10:00- Mary Hartman. 10:30 - Mystery Theatre (It's O'Henry week). Started First Men in the Moon. Went to bed at 12:00.

Wednesday, January 12, 1977

Not going to write much today because nothing happened. I got to school a little late, so I didn't know what was going on. But there was no heat in our school. So we went to the Kennedy Auditorium.

That's all I can say. I spent six hours sitting, except for 40 minutes for lunch. It was so boring I walked home. 3:30 - Dinah. 5:00 - My Favorite Martian. 5:30 - Fell asleep until 8:30. 10:00 - Mary Hartman. 10:30- Mystery Theatre. 11:30-12:00 - Read and finished The Island of Dr. Moreau. Went to bed at 12:15.

Tuesday, January 11, 1977

It was a half day today. I'm going to tell you what happened. Remember Walis, the big fat galoot of a kid. He had to get a paper signed by O'Keefe because he never does his homework. He was afraid to tell his parents, so he signed his mother's name. I think he comes from a psychopathic family, because he's always getting beat up.

He got into so much trouble he had to all up his parents and tell them what he did.

Finished "Carrie". Went to bed at 12:00. Cheryl went to a bridal fashion show.

Poor Walis. I remember him as being sort of an broken intellectual. He was really smart, but had a strange screwed up quality to him. I remember my mother hated him and was one of the few times she told me to stay away from someone.

Monday, January 10, 1977

Today I'm going to talk about the news. But I'm not going to write a lot because I'm reading "Carrie".

Every week or so I should say, "Today, there's a fire" and how many people are killed. Mike told me that a piece of Antarctica is melting and it's going to raise the level of the ocean 250 feet.

I'm going to kill that dog, he did it again; came into my room and peed just because I wouldn't let him go downstairs. He's so stupid. Read to page 115. Went to bed at 1:00. It was Sparky's birthday today. And Jim Thompson was inaugurated.

I'm certainly not one to dis-believe about global warming. But I find that being told that Antarctica is melting in 1977 is a little amusing.

And poor Sparky and his bladder problem... it was his downfall. He was also going through some major issues emotionally because Cheryl was now serious with Mike and was ignoring him.

Sunday, January 9, 1977

Woke at 12:00. Really didn't do anything all afternoon. Paul left at 4:30. Oh, yes, we did go to the store for Cher. He is always asking stupid questions like: Why are Cher and Mike getting married.

4:30 - Beverly Hillbillies. 5:00 - Caves. 5:30 - Let's Make a Deal. 6:00 - Homework.

7:30 - THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT. 10:00- More homework. 11:00- David Niven's World. Went to bed at 12:30.

That's Entertainment made a huge impression on me. It was the first time that I had been exposed to the movie musical, besides The Wizard of Oz.

I recall David Niven's World being a very cozy Sunday night show with him traveling around the world talking quietly about foreign lands...

Saturday, January 8, 1977

Paul slept over today. Woke at 12:00. He came over at about 7:00. We cleaned up the basement, etc, until about 10:00, when we went to my bedroom and looked at this diary. 10:30- Listened to the Mystery Theatre, played cards and stuff, until about 2. We played Crazy 8s and Tong. I lost three games, he lost one.

About 5:00 when we were going to bed, he started act like a baby. He wanted all the covers. We went to sleep at 5:30.

Tong was a game that my parents would play with my Uncle Tony and Uncle Bruno. It basically was Poker, except that when you got a winning hand you slammed you hand on the table and yelled "TONG".

When I write that Paul acted like a baby I don't think I'm exaggerating. He would stamp his feet and talk in a baby voice and pretend to cry saying things like "Paulie want blanket". Looking back on it, it seems very strange.

Friday, January 7, 1977

Yesterday did another composition about THE CASK OF AMONTILLADO . I'm going to just put down things that happened from now on. In Science, did experiment about melting iodine. Music, that room is such a bore, I almost fell asleep.

During lunch Wallis was making such a pig of himself that Troy made him sit by himself. Reading, read part of the Time Machine, finished it later on during the day.

I was reading The Christmas Carol on tape. I still have two more chapters, and I'm still not finished. That's all I'm writing. Went to bed at 2:00.

If I ever find my tapes of my reading the Christmas Carol, I'll be sure to post them for all the world to hear. But I think that they must be destroyed or thown away. Too bad, I bet they are a hoot.

Thursday, January 6, 1977

Today I'm going to talk about Mary Hartman, because the show was on a for a year. Yesterday I remember while it first came one. It started with a mass murder, and I can't say ended because it hasn't ended. Mary has her own style; a brand of comedy that no one has matched.

Some of my favorite shows are when Loretta was on Dinah and she made that crack about the Jews. And the last show of the season when everything happened, Charlie got shot, Mary had a nervous breakdown, and Cathy ran away.

So may I wish to the show 'Good Luck'. Good luck to Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. Went to bed at 12:40.

This is a bit like when blogs collide, but I just did a post about Mary Hartman on my other blog. Click here if you haven't read it.

Wednesday, January 5, 1977

Today I saw a show about violence in America. And it does affect children. It doesn't affect me, but some kids there heroes are Batman and Robin, so they act like them. They come up to you on the street and they start kicking and hitting. They think Happy Days Fonzie started the boys to act like him.

There's no more room. Went to bed at 12:45.

Tuesday, January 4, 1977

I'm not going to write about school today, because it's always the same. I'm always being picked on, because I'm not like them. I don't smoke or make out under the bridge. I just sit around and watch TV and read. I used to pal around with lots of girls, but they are in another room (like Brown) or they are stuck-ups like Kim and they snub there nose at me because I don't meet their standards. McAdams and McGyer, Ryan and Wojack are what we are supposed to be to be cool, but if that's cool I'd rather be square.

Mary Hartman means more to me than the whole school could, put together. It's taught me more about life and that's more than those punks know.

Almost everyone I meet likes me. Let's face it I'm different. What they like, I don't like. I like the opposite people, places. Music, especially.

Now I must go, I'm wasting a whole page and who knows what tomorrow will bring. Went to bed at 12:30.

I think that the world was just on my shoulders at the beginning of 1977... and it didn't seem like I was getting a lot of sleep!

Monday - January 3, 1977

Had trouble falling asleep. I maybe fell asleep at 4:30 or 5:00. And to top that I woke at 8:15. In school the usual. Science, I.A. Took notes. He gave us a lecture on the high price of living. Gym; they were fixing the heating unit in there, but we still went in the gym. It was so cold; I'd guess about 40 degrees. And to top it off they made us take our shirts off...

3:00- Space Angel . I can't remember the time, but I was taping comic books with me as all the actors. It came out pretty good.

7:00- Rhoda. 7:30 - Phyllis. 8:00- Maude. 8:30 - All's Fair. 10:00- Mary Hartman. Fell asleep while watching the Tonight Show.

Sunday, January 2, 1977

Last night before they (Gene and Eydie) left; they watched Those Magnificant Men in Their Flying Machines until 12:00. the movie ended at 1:15. I went to bed at 3. Woke today at 3:00. Watched Angry Red Planet; it was so stupid. I wasted the whole day sleeping. The Christmas tree was taken down today. Tha's all for Christmas for a year.

At 6:00 - Emergency One. 7:00 - A half hour of McMillian. I found out that his wife died in the series. 8:00 - WW and the Dixie Dance Kings. 10:00 - Washed Hair. 10:30- A Star is Born, the 1937 version. It was very good. Back to school again. I hope I can get up tomorrow. Went to bed at 12:45.

I recently re-watched Those Magnificant Men... it was terribly dull.

Saturday, January 1, 1977

A New Year. 1977! Who knows what will happened. It may be the best year, but then again it may not. Woke at 10:50, from Sparky wanting to go out. That dog has to go out every three minutes and I'm the one who has to let him out.

At 11, watched a musical with Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra. I think I saw it before but it had a different title. Oh, yes the name of the movie was Anchors Away. While watching TV I fell asleep about 2:00 and woke at 4. Watched Angel in My Pocket. then Gene came by to eat. They are trying to have a baby.

7:00- Mary Tyler Moore. 7:30 - Bob Newhart. 8:00 - Belle of Amherst. I will will tell you about that tomorrow, also what happened the rest of the night.

Poor Sparky had bad kidneys. He was probably about 11 at this point and a pure bred. My parents had no patience for animals; and had him put to sleep as soon as my sister got married. My brother and his wife never did have a baby.

And I'm planning on re-watching Belle of Amherst soon. It was one of those PBS staples that was always on at pledge drive time. I remember that I was always moved by the performance of Julie Harris, and she became one of my favorite actresses because of this show.

Friday, December 31, 1976

I was going to pour my heart out on these last two pages of this diary, but there's nothing to pour. woke at 2:30.

Watched Match Game 76, or should I say Match Game 77. 3:30- Gay Paree. 5:00 - Dick Van Dyke and Company. 6:30- Odd Couple. 7:00- It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. This is the funniest movie I've ever seen. 10:00- I spent all New Year's Eve alone. You see my whole family went to a party. I had a fun (ha!) evening anyway. 10:00- Mary Hartman. 10:30- Duck Soup. 12:00- The Flying Deuces. From 1:00 - 1:40- Read my diary. 1:45, Abbot and Costello Meet the Invisible Man.

I don't like this new year because I'm going to have to go to high school. Well, the next time I write in here it will be a new year. 1977!!!!

Saw the last Bi-Centennial minute.

Went to bed at 5:00.

I don't know why I stayed home by myself and didn't go to the party. Maybe it was because I couldn't miss Mary Hartman? But I recall that most of my New Year's Eve nights were spent watching classic films on WGN and WLS. WGN would always show Marx Bros movies and then after midnight WLS would show Astaire and Rogers films like Top Hat. I don't think I went to an actual New Year's Eve party until I was 19 or so.

And Mad World, still remains one of my favorite films. I finally saw it at the Cinerama Theatre in L.A on a huge screen. Laine Kazan and Michelle Lee were sitting behind me.

I wish that all the
Bicentennial minutes were released. I remember that at the beginning there were all these big stars doing them, but to do 365 of them the started to slip into the Loretta Swifts and McLean Stevenson about August.

See you all next week in 1977.

Thursday, December 30, 1976

Well didn't sleep as late today. Woke at 2:30 and watched Match Game. 3:30- I Remember Mama. 6:00- Dick Van Dyke. 6:30- Odd Couple. 7:00 - Van Dyke and Company. 8:00- My new soap, "Strange Paradise". 9:00- Tried and succeeded in taping a story.

10:00- Mary Hartman, Loretta got amnesia. 10:30 - Tonight Show. 11:30 - Played checkers with Cheryl, 3 games. I lost all. 1:00- Land of the Giants. Read and finished Time Traders.

Sparky had the nerve to come into my bedroom when I was sitting there and pee... Was I mad!

Went to bed at 3:30.

Wednesday, December 29, 1976

I feel so stupid. First for writing Tuesday's entry on Thursday page, then second for sleeping until 4:00! Remember for the time I put down that I go to bed is not the time I fall asleep; it may vary from 5 minutes to 5 hours. Well 4:00- I Remember Mama. 5:00- My Favorite Martian. 6:30 - Odd Couple. 7:00- CPO Sharky. 8:30- The Practice.

I have found my new Dark Shadows, but it's a new soap opera, that I haven't caught the story yet. 10:00- Mary Hartman. 11:30 - Worked on scrap book. 1:00- Land of the Giants. Started to read Time Traders to page 114.

Oh, yes the name of the soup is called "Strange Paradise". Went to bed at 2:45.

I used to be a regular viewer of CPO Sharky. I have no memory of The Practice, but a IMDB reviewer claims it was one of the best sitcoms he'd seen.

and I think I thought that Strange Paradise was a new show. But it was from 1969. It was a clone of Dark Shadows. It was set on some island and had lots of references to voodoo.

Tuesday, December 28, 1976

Woke at 12:30 from a phone call from Paul. After a while he started to talk dumb, like saying that I was stupid for reading books. So I told him that I didn't want him to come over.

1:00- Green Acres. 1:30 - Paul came anyway. We played checkers. 5:30 - Big Blue Marble. 6:30- Odd Couple. 7:00 - Happy Days. 7:30- Went to the library and took out about 7 books. Oh yes, Paul got me "Carrie".

8:30- Rich Man, Poor Man. 10:00- Mary Hartman. 10:30 - Tonight Show. 12:00- Tomorrow. 1:00- Land of the Giants. Went to bed at 2:30.

I'm not sure what Paul intension was to insult me about reading books and then getting me a book. I remember reading "Carrie" very clearly. It was the first time I'd ever heard of Stephen King. And the first time I ever read about a period!

Monday - December 27, 1976

So another day, another dollar as they say. Because today I got three! So now I have a total of $20. First $5 from Grandma, then $2 from Uncle Tony and Aunt Celica. $10 from Gene and Eydie and today $3 from Aunty Mae and Mike.

Woke at 1:00. There were so many phone calls all day long. 1:00- Green Acres. 1:30 - Lucy. 2:00 - All in the Family. 2:30 - Match Game.

3:00- Randy called from downtown. 3:30. The Snow Queen. 5:00- My Favorite Martian. 5:30 - Got a phone call from my cousin Tom, who I hardly know. Well he invited us to his party. Friday (New Year's Eve) where there's going to be a party with everyone on my mother's side coming. 6:00- Washed hair. 6:30- Odd Couple. 7:00 - The Goodies. 7:30 - Went to Mike(2) house. To know which Mike I'm talking about I'm putting a "1" next to Cher's Mike and a "2" next to Aunty Mae's Mike.

I've no more room.

I'm shocked that I got money from my Grandmother. I really never knew her because my mother hated my father's side of the family and we never had much to do with them. My Uncle George lived on the corner and we hardly ever saw them. My Grandmother lived with them for a long time. I remember my parents having fights because my mother thought that they were going to have to take in the old woman.

Sunday, December 26, 1976

Woke late today at 1:30. Paul came over. Played cards and listened to Poe tape. Not much happened after that.

8:30 - "When the Year That Was", a funny look at last year. 10:00 - No Honestly. 10:30 - Mr Deeds Goes to Town, parts I didn't see. Not much to write so that's all I'm going to write. Went to bed at 2:45.

Saturday, December 25, 1976

I didn't watch TV all day (almost). It's strange that I like Christmas Eve better than Christmas, but that all depends. I woke at 1:00 and almost went straight to my Monster's Book, that I finished today. 4:30 - Gene and Eydie came over. We ate roast. About 7:30 - Mike and his folks came by. I didn't even say 'hi'.

Gene was looking at my Movie Book that has a chapter on sex. Aunt Cecila saw it too yesterday. I was so embarrassed. 8:00 - 12:00 - We all watched films of the family. When we got to the one with Cheryl as a baby taking a bath the bulb blew out. Another one would cost $10! M.D.P. Went to bed at 3:15.

Might see the new version of King Kong tomorrow.

I can still feel the embarrassment of of my Aunt Celica looking at the Movie book. There was a chapter on sex, and the photo was from I Am Curious Yellow. It was a scene with a couple nude pressed together, standing in a nude embrace. Really no gental action, but pretty risque stuff to give a 13 year old. My aunt just went 'Oh!' and quickly turned the page. My Aunt Celica just died last week. I wrote a post about it on my Hole in the Head blog.

and I have no idea what M.D.P means. I'm sure it was so masterbatory code that's lost in time.
