Friday, April 8, 1977

Woke at 12:00. Watched Casper. 1:30- Family Feud. 2:00- All in the Family. 2:30- Re-taped my Mystery Theatres. 3:30- Varon the Unbelievable. 6:00- I Love Lucy. 6:30- Get Smart. 7:00- a half hour of Here Comes Peter Cotton Tail. 7:30- Listened to music. 8:00- Easter Parade. 10:00- Mary Hartman; Bigfoot is in Fernwood!

10:30- Talked to Paul while I taped Mystery Theatre. 12:30- A movie about a Wax Museum. 2:00- Men with Wings. Went to bed at 3:30.

Thursday, April 7, 1977

Let's skip school today. And start at 3:30. 3:30- The Mysterians. 8:00- The People's Command Performance. 10:00- Mary Hartmen. 10:30- Talked to Paul. 12:00- Man Alive.

This is my 8th month of writing in here!

Wednesday, April 6, 1977

OK. Today I hated. I left my mallet head on my Science table and I went to do an experiment. I told the stupidest kid in the room Escamela, a Spanish kid, that he was dumb, because he called me a fag! So he took my mallet head, but I can't prove it.

7:00- 10 - Did homework.

Being called a fag and being harassed and beaten up didn't really reach full force until I was a freshmen in high school. So it's interesting that this incident happened.

Tuesday, April 5, 1977

Today was a half day. 9:30- Went to get graduation pictures taken. I.A. Worked on my mallet. All afternoon I fooled around with the stereo. I put four speakers on it. 3:30- Plan 9 from Outer Space. 7:00- Listened to story on the radio. 10:00- Mary Hartman. 10:30- Mystery Theatre. Continued to read book by the night.

Monday, April 4, 1977

Today was like all the others. In I.A. I forgot my mallet head, so I started doing my handle. In gym, we were doing the high jump. I made it up to 4 feet. It was pouring outside when I left school. 3:30- A stupid movie called First Space Ship on Venus. 5:00- Fixed up my puzzle picture that I made. 6:00- Dick Van Dyke. 6:30- The Odd Couple. 7:00- worked on my puzzle. 8:00- Maude. 8:30- All's Fair. 9:00- Paul called. 10:00 Mary Hartman. 10;30- Mystery Theatre. I'm finished with my third tape of shows. 12:00-45. I read "The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane" by the night light.

I clearly remember The Little Girl... and I remember reading by night light. My parents at this time, probably because I was sick all the time, had put me on a strict curfew for going to sleep. But once a night owl, always a night owl... I would wait until they went to sleep and I'd sit on the floor and read by the five watt light light that was in my room. I did this for months, and it's really the best experience I can think of reading. I was so into everything I read. And it was a tad dangerous.

The Little Girl was made into a movie with Jodie Foster.

Sunday, April 3, 1977

All you can say happened today was Paul came over and we looked at films on the editor. Don't really feel like writing today.

Oh yeah at 10:30 The Producers, a very funny movie. Went to bed at 12:45.

Saturday, April 2, 1977

What a birthday. It was horrid. There were tornado watches all day. I had a cold and didn't feel good. Cher wanted to play cards but I didn't so I watched a movie with Jerry Lewis, "Your Never Too Young". At 12:30 went to the store with Cher. 6:00- The Goodies. 6:30 - The Odd Couple. 11:00- Witness for the Prosecution, during which I ate pizza.

Birthdays have never been a big thing in my family. And although things have changed, I've had many a crappy birthday. I remember the first year I moved away from home the only birthday card I got was from the Home Shopping Network.

Friday, April 1, 1977

I'm catching a cold again. In school, Science he gave us a lecture on high school. I.A. Yesterday he was burning mad that someone had taken his key to the glasses cabinet. So today he was so happy that someone sent it to him in the mail.

During reading I started a short story report on The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. I also stayed after school to finish it, but he gave me the book to take home. I got the film Cleopatra, set 4 but they didn't have the other 3.

Referring to Cleopatra: As I am now, I was obsessed with projecting things. And the libraries would often have 8mm films to take out. And the main branch still did up until a couple years ago. The problem was that they never had the full movies.

I have vivid memories of watching the 3 hour DW Griffith movie Intolerance on a small movie editor sitting on my bed with the covers over my head pretending I was in a grand movie palace.

March 31, 1977

This thing will never happen again. From now on I will write in here everyday. Today was the Roller Skating party. 5:00 - took shower. 6:00- Dykel came over and stayed to 6:30.

The high points of the evening were that I skated with Brown twice. and one kid took so many uppers that he ran into a wall. Also this other kids was slammed into the wall.

That's all I'm writing today.

The Fleetwood Roller Rink was a complete dive. I was suprised that they are still there on the corner of Archer and Harlem... but a visit to their web-site shows that they have brushed off the dirt and put some glitter on it and are celebrating their 50th anniversary. My memories of it are that it looked like a brick barn.

Missing Days

There is nothing written for March 28, 29. On the 30th I wrote. I'm not going to write in her until April 1.

Sunday, March 27, 1977

In the news.

An Airline collided with another killing 550 people.

Saturday, March 26, 1977

Went downtown with Randy today.

That's all I wrote.

Friday, March 25, 1977

This page was not written on.

Thursday, March 24, 1977

Didn't do anything today, so I'm not going to write much, but I gave Korshack The Ghosts That Walk in Washington book. 6:00- Listened to Dick Lawrence's Sounds of the 20s. 7:00- Fantastic Journey. 8:30- Three's Company.

Wednesday, March 23, 1977

Let's skip school again and let's just start at 3:30. 30;30- Dinah with Phyllis Diller. 5:00- Read The Ghosts that Walk in Washington. 6:00- Talked to Dick Lawrence and he said my records are going to be on the radio. 7:30- The premiere of Loves Me, Loves Me Not. 8:00- A half hour of Prince Valiant.

10:00- Mary Hartman. 10:30- Mystery Theatre.

I've talked about Dick Lawrence before but to remind everyone. He was a disc jockey on an FM station in Chicago in 70s. He did a couple shows, one a Broadway show tunes show, and the other an old music show. He later went on to produce a great series of radio shows using old music and talking about the stories of the day. He was really nice to me, and would talk to me for hours about old music. It was huge deal for me to have my 78s on the air, and ironic because 30 years later I was programing music for This American Life.

And it looks like Love Me/Loves Me Not was just a pilot. No more info on it... Anyone else remember it?

Tuesday, March 22, 1977

Today I was tardy. That's all that happened today. But other 5 kids were caught smoking in the bathroom. Most of them were suspended. Oh, Yeah and I had to stay after to school to finish my bird in Art. Walis was there so I to 3:30. Then we walked out but he forgot his books, so we had to go get them. The teacher left, but we caught her before she left. Didn't get home until 3:15.

Finished my puzzle.

I'm sure things are still the same in schools today with kids doing bad things in the bathroom... But I'm sure today it's meth.

Monday, March 21, 1977

I got a lot to write, I'll skip talking about school, but I did have to stay after school with Mr. O'Keefe. 3:30- Went to the store and got a Fred Astaire puzzle. 4:30- Dinah. 5:00- My Favorite Martian. 6:00- I Love Lucy. 6:30- Get Smart. 7:30- The Brady Bunch Hour. 8:00- The American Film Institute's Salate to Bette Davis. 10:00- Mary Hartman. 10:30- Mystery Theatre. 11:30- Listened to Eddie Schwartz.

Sunday, March 20, 1977

In the morning I woke up and the amplifier was on and my shirt which I had hung on the hook in the bathroom was on the floor in front of the amplifier. Spooky huh... Paul and I worked on the board again; I wasn't moving it nor Paul, but the thing was answering questions. 2:30- The Time Travelers. 6:00 -The Wizard of Oz. 8:30-10 Talked to Randy. 10:00- No Honestly. 10:30 - My Favorite Martian.

I was always spooked in that basement, maybe because of all the nooks and closets that there were to hide in. But I hated to be down there alone; until I was in high school then I spent most of my time down there alone. I remember this night fairly clearly because it was really scary... although I wouldn't have put it past Paul to have moved my shirt. Years later I was doing the Ouija with another friend, it told me I was going to work the rest of my life at McDonald's. So much for the spirit world.

Saturday, March 19, 1977

Today was the scariest day of my life. Paul sept over and he brought his Ouiji Board. All night long he listened to Kiss and to the basketball game, but at 10:00 we worked with the board. The Leters T.M.G came up. 10:30- Mystery Theatre. 11:30-Saturday Night. 1:00-2:50 - Monkey Business. 3:30- started to play a taped Mystery Theatre, but both of us were too tired to listen to more than one story. So I got up and shut off EVERYTHING.

They had the last Mary Tyler Moore show on tonight.

Paul had every Kiss album and was most proud of Kiss' Love Gun album which he a copy in the wrapper. I remember him saying that it was going to be worth a fortune in ten years. 30 years later it's going for $24.99 on ebay. The spookiness continues on the next post.

Friday, March 18, 1977

Must keep this very short. The highlight of today was the high school interview. In O'Keefe read Phantoms of the South. When I left at 1:00. The classes I'm taking are Early World History and Drafting.

Wednesday, March 16, 1977

I'm so behind on this diary, that I'm just going to write down some of the highlights of the week. It started Thursday when Dad shut off my Mystery Theatre and almost ruined my tape. I was so mad that I didn't write in here for that night. One night went into the next and here I am.

I got two puzzles all of which I finished and glued together on a long piece of wood.. One is "Gone With the Wind" and other is Laurel and Hardy. On Mary Hartman this week Mary was in the collapsed factory.

Missing Days

There are no entries from March 10-15.

Wednesday, December 1, 1976

Today both my ears were clogged, which is the worst thing that could happen to to you when everyone is sitting around you and wants the answers in Math and you can't hear them.

Well, that's the way it was today. You see Randy Dykel, my all-time protector, let me use his calculator but the batteries went dead. That's the high points of school.

At home I was laying on the couch when Randy walked in and I don't mean Dykel. That was about 4. From then until 5 we went to the park. He left at 5:30. Paul came over at 7. We did homework. It seemed like I couldn't stop laughing. I laugh at the most trivial of thing. He left at 9. Went to bed at 12:15.

Having a calculator in 1977 was a huge deal. They were the Ipods of their day.

Tuesday, March 8, 1977

Yesterday I forgot to mention that I went to the library and I got out many books on parapsychology or the study of ghosts. I believe in the subject all together. My late Uncle Tom (remember I went to his funeral) seems to be paying his family in Wisconsin some visits. From what I heard they hear footsteps when there's no one there. Sort of spooky, ain't it.

Well I got three books about the subject "The Phantoms of Dixie", which I'm now on page 58. And one about the reincarnation of a woman and another about psychics.

My ear is getting better, but sometimes it relapses into being clogged.

Ghosts have and still interest me... give me a good Discovery Channel documentary on some haunted house and I'm happy.

Monday, March 7, 1977

It always feels strange when you come back to school after having been out a few days. So there I was. I always feel like I'm an outsider in that school, but that's a different story. My ear was crummy. It was like I was deaf in one or both ears.

In Science we're going to learn about heart attacks and what to do if someone has one.

Would you believe that this is my 6th month of writing in here. This diary is half over, how time flies. I remember when I first got this diary. I wondered what would happen; the answer is nothing much. The next six months must be more exciting.

And I remember the problems I had with my ears. They got worse when I was in high school and I think it was my sophomore year I was completely deaf in one of my ears. Because my mother was didn't trust doctors she never took me to see anyone about it; Then when she was with my sister and her new baby at the pediatrician she asked the doctor to look at my ear. I remember him telling her it was a vitamin deficiency and he gave me some Flintstones Vitamins to take. It didn't clear up for about three months; and I continue to have some hearing loss in that ear.

Sunday, March 6, 1977

Woke at 1:30. My ear was cleared up a little bit. I must keep it short. The high points of the day were I finally finished my puzzle, but I'm missing 4 pieces. I taped an "Adventure" radio drama. To get back to my ear, around 8:30 it started to act up so I asked Mom to put this stuff that clears up your ears. It made it worse!

I finished the day this way. 10:00- Rock Follies. 12:00- Bob Hope movie that I don't know the name and from then on to 2:00. I listened to a variety of things on the radio.

Rock Follies was a PBS/BBC program that had Rula Lenska in it. She became a joke later on when she was in some hair shampoo commercial where she acted like everyone knew her. Because I used to watch Rock Follies, I really did know who she was.

Saturday, March 5, 1977

I hate to be deaf, because now I know the way it is. I barely have a cold now, but my right ear is clogged to the point of deafness. I spent my day with my head on a heating pad while I was re-taping the Mystery Theatre I taped but didn't have. Did that until 2:30, when I watched Abbott and Costello in Keep 'em Flying. After that taped some more. 5:00- Beverly Hillbillies. 5:30- Lucy. 6:30- 7:00 - I found a tape of Barbra Streisand, My Name Is Barbra. 7-8 Talked to Paul. 8-8:40 - Talked to Randy. 8:45 - 10 - talked to Paul.

10:00- Opening Soon at a Theatre Near You. 10:30- A Barbra Streisand Special. Went to bed at 3.

This must have been the start of my Barbra Streisand obsession.

Tuesday, April 10, 2007

Friday, March 4, 1977

Woke at 1. 1:00- Green Acres. I feel worse than yesterday. So again I didn't go to school. 1:30- Lucy. 3:00- Star Trek Cartoons. 3:30- Torn Curtain, part 2. 5:00- My Favorite Martian. 5:30- Hazel. 6:00- I Love Lucy. 6:30- Get Smart. 8:00- The Man From Atlantis. 10:00- Mary Hartman, during which Paul said he was sick too. So that kills tomorrow because Paul and Randy were going to come over.

10:30- I taped Mystery Theatre but I didn't listen to it. 12:30- Blood Mania. Went to bed reading An American Tragedy to page 113. Went to bed at 3.

The Man from Atlantis was one of my favorite shows. Patrick Duffy in a speedo with gills, what wasn't to like. And I don't remember Blood Mania... but again Friday night horror movies were the best in the 70s.

Thursday, March 3, 1977

I woke today sicker than yesterday. So sick that I didn't go to school. Woke at 11:00- Watched TV all day. 11:30- Banana Splits. 12:00- Mike Douglas. 1:30- Green Acres. 2:00- Love American Style. 2:30- 3:30- Wrote in here. 3:30- Torn Curtain, part 1. 5:00 - My Favorite Martian.

Well today I got a haircut. I didn't want it as short as it is, but I know it will grow back.

7:00- The Outer Space Connection. 10:30- Put my puzzle together while I was taping Mystery Theatre. I went to be at 1.

My mother always cut my hair. I think the first time I ever got my hair cut by someone else was at the Capri Beauty School on Archer Avenue. My mother wasn't a bad haircutter, just sort of along the lines of cut straight and short...

Wednesday, March 1977

I have a cold, and I know that I'm not going to school tomorrow because I'm writing this on Thursday. Forget school again.

3:45 - Talked to Randy. He may be sleeping here on Saturday. 5:00- My Favorite Martian. 5:30- Hazel. 6:00- Paul called. The rest of the night I worked on my puzzle and listened to Huck Finn that I got from the library.

9:00- Barry Manilow special. 10:00- Mary Hartman. 10:30- I taped the Mystery Theatre but I didn't listen to it yet. I did the same thing yesterday.

Started a book called Witchcraft in Salem's Lot, but I'm still reading American Tragedy.

Tuesday, March 1, 1977

Didn't feel good today. I'm skipping school today because I don't have that much time with this diary. After school worked on my tapes. Oh yeah, in I.A. we made screwdrivers.

7:30- Laverne and Shirley 8:00- Rich Man, Poor Man. 9:45. Mom wanted to give me haircut, 15 minutes before Mary Hartman!!!

10:30- Mystery Theatre.

Monday, February 28, 1977

Nothing happened. Really it's the same thing everyday. But I did go to the library and started An American Tragedy. I don't want to write a lot. 8:00- The end of Bigfoot: The Mysterious Monsters. 8:30 - The Strange Possession of Mrs. Oliver. 10:00- Mary Hartman. 10:30- Mystery Theatre.

There's an extra page in here so I'm saving it for Cheryl's wedding.

A blank page for the leap year followed this...I didn't keep writing until Cheryl's wedding in August... now I'm sorry I stopped.

Sunday, February 27, 1977

So Paul came here again from 2 until 9. First we went all over looking for a candy that pops in your mouth. We sat around and did homework. He left at 9. 10:30- Mystery Theatre.

I'm writing this on Thursday because I didn't write all week.

I think at this point I was getting bored writing everyday... the diary starts to get a little fragmented until it ends mid April...

Saturday, February 26, 1977

Must keep it short. I'm writing this on Monday. Don't remember much, but what I watched. 4:30- Green Acres. 5:00- Beverly Hillbillies. 6:00- The Goodies. 6:30- The Muppets. 7:00 - Mary Tyler Moore. 7:30- Bob Newhart. 8:00- The Land That Time Forgot. 10:00- Talked to Paul. 10:30- Rosemary's Baby. Went to bed at 2.

Monday, April 2, 2007

Friday, February 25, 1977

I hate staying after school, but today in Science I didn't finish something. I.A. He told me that the, morning the car was stuck in the ice, there was a test in I.A, that I never made up so I get an 'N' the rest of the year. In Art, she finally moved Wallis away from me; we're still making boxes.

I'm not reading 'The Scarlett Letter".

After school was so funny. some kids had to go to three classes. All I had to do was write one line.

10:30- Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Went to bed at 1:00.

As evidenced before in here, the I.A. teacher hated me... so it's not surprising he'd give me a failing grade for the year. I think "N" meant Not Completed. Poor screwed up Wallis; if a nerd like me couldn't stand him or was he in love with me and I with him... hmmm.

Thursday, February 24, 1977

Today's subject for today is High school. I don't want to go! We got a list of all the classes. First of all you must get 18 units to pass. 16 in a major and 2 in other subjects. You must take 4 years of English or 3 years and one elective. One of the electives is drama. When i get older I want to be an actor.

Then 2 years of Math and 1 year Science or the other way around. Then 4 years of gym. One year of Art is 1/2 unit. and 1 year of Music. And last, but not least, Social Studies 3 years! And you must pass all of them. Isn't that dumb!

It was funny that I keep saying I want to be an actor. When I was in high school the Goodman Theatre came to our school and offered a off-site class to be trained there. They were doing a Chicago Public Schools joint project. There was an extra fee but my parents thought it was a waste of money... Who knows where I'd be if I'd have taken that class... probably on a UPN sitcom playing the nerdy boss of Brandy right now...

Wednesday, Feburary 23, 1977

Nothing happened in school today. But Kervectin (sp?) is checking every one's absence notes to see if they were forged. Today Mr. Particle made us cases for mallet heads and my table made ours up-side-down. We had Co-Ed gym classes today. O'Keefe made us write down what happened to us this week; That's a laugh because nothing happened to me this week. Korshack was mad today because everyone was coughing. she said, "it sounds like a clinic in here'. So she gave us a punishment. she said if it's like this tomorrow we won't finish the chapter and we'll get a test and we'll have to turn in our work. Then I'm in trouble because I didn't do it!

Tuesday, February 22, 1977

Wallis is such a fag. He's always touching me. But I don't want to get sick on this book, so I'm glad he's going to Curie H.S. next year. As a matter of fact I will not know him after this year. Thank God. Let's skip school, that's good, but I have to back tomorrow, that's bad.

I have just tons of homework that I was going to finish tonight, but guess who came over -- Paul. So I didn't do a thing. 10:00- Mary Hartman. Cheryl watched it with me. I was so embarrassed because they were talking about lesbians. 10:30- You Can't Cheat an Honest Man. Went to bed listening to the radio.

I think that this might have been the time my sister talked to my parents about Mary Hartman and how I shouldn't be watching it.

Monday, February 21, 1977

Woke at 1:30. Watched Lucy, Beverly Hillbillies. From 2:30- 3:30- listened to tapes. 3:30- The Hot Rock. 5:00- My Favorite Martian. 5:30- Tapes, records, puzzle. 7:00-9:00- Paul was here. 9:30- Dean Martin's Celebrity Roast. 10:00- Mary Hartman: Heather wants to become a nun. 10:30- Tillie and Gus.

Went to bed at 12:45.

Sunday, February 20, 1977

12:00- Woke up from a call from Paul saying he was coming over, but I'd heard that before. He got here at 3. I think we did the same thing as yesterday. Worked on my puzzle and made a silly tape. I thought he could sleep over, but he couldn't. I asked three times.

7:00- The Spell. 8:30- 9:30 - Puzzle. Then he left. 9:30- 10:30- Puzzle. 10:30- Mystery Theatre; I taped it but it came out all fuzzy. 11:30- The Skull. 12:30- The 5 Pennies.

Then I went to bed.

The Spell was a made-for-tv version of Carrie. All I remember is some girl falling from some rope she was climbing on... I think I lived for these outsiders seek revenge movies. I so wanted to be able to make people's heads explode at this time.

Saturday, February 19, 1977

Woke at 12 from a phone call from Paul. He said he was coming over. 1-2 sat at the table with Nancy and Cheryl. Paul came at 2. We worked on my puzzle, played air hockey, etc, etc. He left at 5.

Worked on my puzzle to 6. 6:30- Muppets. 7:00- Mary Tyler Moore. 7:30- Bob Newhart. 8:00- All in the Family. 8-9, puzzle. 9:00- Talked to Randy. 10:00- Burns and Allen. 10:30 - Saturday Night Live. Paul called in the middle of it and we talked until 11:40. Paul and Randy may sleep over tomorrow. 12:15 - Love Happy. Went to bed at 2:45.

Nancy was my sister's best friend. I think she was her bridesmaid at her wedding. Nancy around this time became a born-again Christian and got a glassy look in her eyes. She constantly was preaching to me, and in fact brought me to her church and for about a year I was 'born-again' too. But then I got bored with it and started listening to Barbra Streisand, but that's another story. I remember Nancy got married around the same time as my sister, she didn't have any booze or music at her wedding. Her mother snuck around to all the guests and said that another party would be happening at the house where they'd really have fun.

Puzzles are wonderful. I miss doing them. They always put me in a tranquil state of mind.
